A charming and cheery beach retreat in laid-back Khao Lak, an hour's drive from Phuket

The Look

With gorgeous Andaman Sea beaches, lush jungle, and limestone mountains, Khao Lak is studded with natural beauty and is a laid-back alternative to crowded Phuket, an hour’s drive to the south. Located on bustling (by Khao Lak standards) Bang Niang beach, La Flora is a complex of two- and three-story buildings and clapboard bungalows (with lovely little porches and pagoda-style roofs) surrounded by tropical gardens and coconut tree–lined paths. Inside, it’s a modern take on traditional Thai design: dark woods, white linens, graphic floral wall paintings, and colored silk accents in rich shades of gold and red.

Bed and Bath

Decorated in bold shades of red, burnt orange and gold, the 138 guestrooms definitely aren’t for the minimally inclined. The plush beds are mounted on dark wooden platforms and have hand-painted headboards. Daybeds sit by the window to take advantage of the ocean or garden views, and all rooms come with idyllic outdoor terraces. Bathrooms have soaking tubs and separate showers and are stocked with botanical products. At just under 500 square feet, the interiors of the Deluxe and Pool Access Rooms are virtually identical. The sole difference is that Pool Access Rooms are on the first floor and have patios that are directly connected to the pool.

La Flora comes with all the facilities you’d expect from a Thai beach resort: two pools (one infinity, another that snakes through the center of the property); an umbrella-filled beach; a water sports center; a tennis court (lessons are available); a well-equipped gym; and an activities roster that includes cooking lessons, mountain-biking excursions, and even classes in Muay Thai (traditional Thai boxing). At the spa you can indulge in a traditional Thai massage, scrubs using locally grown coffee beans, and facials featuring a fresh cucumber mask. The beachfront restaurant is shaded by palms and dishes up traditional Thai cuisine and fresh seafood.

In the Area

Take advantage of Khao Lak’s quiet vibe and get deep into the stunningly beautiful natural environment that characterizes this corner of Thailand. Phang Nga Bay provides jaw-dropping photo ops of nearly 50 limestone karsts (striated, foliage-covered rock formations that rise dramatically out of the sea). Or suit up and venture to Similan Islands National Marine Park, one of Thailand’s top dive spots, where the best sites are underwater. For those looking to channel their inner Tarzan, a trek through the jungles of Khao Sok National Park atop an elephant is not to be missed.
Of course, it’s not all about natural glory in Khao Lak; the nearby village of Bang Niang has various outdoor markets to explore, including a bustling night market.

Wonderful place for families and couples

Top experience. Food is good. Staff is nice and friendly and we had an upgrade of our room so we could watch our 5 month old baby from the swimming pool.
Never met a manager caring for the guests like this!
Another plus is that their spa is very good and they both have luxury spa with medium range prices and cheap massage option at the beach.
Location is also great - private beach and 1-200 meters from at larger restaurant and bar area so you have all eating possibilities at hand.

Lovely, friendly resort but definitely the right time for a refurb

This was our 3rd stay at La Flora, having stayed in 2015 and 2018 previously. This time we also brought my mum.

We stayed in the deluxe rooms once again. Whilst these are very comfortable, some of the bathroom fittings can be temperamental.
However, the planned refurb over the next 5 months this summer and then again next year will make a massive difference - we saw one of the upgraded rooms and they look very stylish and modern.

The staff make this place what it is - particularly the staff at the towel station and beach areas. All staff have a smile on their face and can't do enough to help and make sure you are comfortable.

Looking forward to visiting again once the refurbishment is completed!

Desperately in need of an upgrade

I'm afraid we didn't even stay one night before we asked to move. Staff seemed fed up and although business like, a little disinterested. Rooms dark, damp, smelly and infested with mosquitos on arrival. Blocked toilet, stained toilet seat, no power ergo no AC or WiFi etc. No loungers available anywhere including the packed area of beach which is covered in torn sandbags.
Apparently this resort is having a make-over in the Summer and it definitely needs it!
I have awarded an extra star because the staff moved us immediately to their sister resort which was fabulous so all ended well.
