Great Stay for Pitt Homecoming
91lukek

Enjoyed a family visit for Pitt Homecoming. A short, scenic walk to campus. Loved this boutique hotel and its unique history. Take the time to read about this home and the interesting personalities who stayed here.

Our room was cozy. Breakfast was great.

The interior is magnificent.

Elegant evening at the Mansions

We arrived late afternoon for our accommodation, but just in time to enjoy a drink at their well stocked bar, before heading out to dinner. The bartender (I'd forgotten his name) was very attentive and service and drinks were great. The room was comfortable with a large bed and gas fireplace. We did have some trouble warming the temperature up, as the thermostat was not very responsive. The elevator to the 2nd floor (I have problems climbing stairs) was unique and didn't open when we first landed. It took a couple of tries to get off. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay, the neighborhood is great and we had a restful night after a long busy day.

Disappointed

Overall very disappointed in my stay. The property is beautiful, but my stay was marred by a few things that are really inexcusable for such an upscale hotel.

The bad:

Bathroom - while clean, had used towels hanging on the back of the door from the last guest. In addition there was a used plastic toothbrush package on the floor underneath the vanity in the bathroom. I also noticed a number of ants on the floor in my bathroom as well. As bad as those items were, I was still ok with the room since the mansion is really a nice old building. My thoughts changed as I settled in to sleep as I was interrupted by the sound of dripping water on my pillow. I turned the light on and discovered a leak in the ceiling from the heavy rain outside. I called the front desk and to their credit they immediately relocated me to another room (they called it a suite but the sleeping area was smaller than my original room). I settled into that room on the third floor (original room was on the second floor) only to find the WiFi didn’t work on the third floor. To top it all off, when I used the shower the next morning the water pressure was horrible.

The good:

They had a great (free) happy hour reception with excellent food and open bar that our group really enjoyed.

Overall I was very disappointed in the Mansions on Fifth and while I will be returning to Pittsburgh on business in just 2 weeks, I won’t be returning there to stay. Ultimately the staff was responsive but feel like they should have offered me some form of discount or even a complimentary night for the inconvenience I encountered. When I checked out, they did not ask me about my stay and made no mention of the inconvenience I encountered the night before.
