Bold architecture meets sleek comfort at this 88-room stay at the doorstep of the majestic Pyrenees
The hotel's curved glass structure sweeps around Pau’s Parc Beaumont, so the restaurant, café and balconies enjoy a view of the park and the snowcapped Pyrenees. Interiors are filled with warm colors, natural materials and plenty of texture. The feel is resolutely contemporary, with modern furnishings and walls adorned by large paintings or sculptures.
Bed and Bath
The guestrooms are spacious and light, and many have mountain views from south-facing terraces. There is a careful emphasis on natural and local materials — parquet flooring, bespoke wooden and leather furniture, along with floral watercolors by a local artist — making for a modern but classic interior. The stone and marble tiles in many bathrooms are from the Pyrenees, and the soft, white bath linens are French-made. The bath products are by Carita, a brand also found in the spa.
The hotel’s local and seasonal restaurant, Le Jeu de Paume, is one of the most celebrated in Pau, while the Grand Prix café serves tasty snacks until midnight. Both look south over the park and have prime viewing positions for Pau’s annual grand prix, when, like Monaco, the town transforms itself into a bustling racetrack. For peace and quiet, the Beauté Spa Bambou, with its indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and Turkish steam room, is open until 10 p.m. and offers a full range of treatments (try one of the signature Carita or Decléor massages).
In the Area
Stroll through the park past the Palais Beaumont, a winter palace turned casino, toward Pau’s ancient château and museum. Take the Boulevard des Pyrénées and gaze down at the steep green slopes with their countless palm trees, and out at the tantalizingly close mountain peaks. Eat out in style at the Majestic, or enjoy local wine with tapas at the Au Grain de Raisin wine bar. Farther afield, just 50 minutes by car or 30 minutes by train, is the pilgrimage town of Lourdes. Want adventure? The Pyrenees are Pau’s playground; there are plenty of summer activities, and come wintertime the nearest ski resort is less than 90 minutes away.
