Recently refurbished five-star stay with sleek looks and prime location just off the Arc de Triomphe
The Sofitel Paris Arc de Triomphe bears the signature style of the late French interior designer Andrée Putman, who was behind such landmark designs as the Air France Concorde, Morgans Hotel in New York and the Guerlain flagship store in Paris. From the spacious reception area to the funky back-lit bar, from the intimate salon to the dramatically flanked walkway, spaces seem to open and merge into one another. Traditional fittings such as parquet floors and bistro tables are revisited in innovative materials. With checkerboard motifs, subdued tones, contrasting materials and harmonious spaces, the hotel reflects the spirit of minimal modernism that underscores all Putnam designs.
Bed and Bath
With 124 rooms, accommodations range from Superior Rooms to Prestige Suites. Bedrooms are havens of peace and harmony in muted tones where the central focus is the wonderful Sofitel MyBed experience — duck down mattress toppers and duvets. The furniture is inspired by the bold Modernist curves of the 1930s; leather banquettes are adorned in silk cushions bearing prints of old maps of Paris, while the attention to detail is most evident in the spacious bathrooms, with their rainfall showers, island bathtubs and lavish Hermès amenities.
Les Cocottes de Christian Constant restaurant is in the inspired hands of chef Christian Constant, who pursues the hotel’s imperative of perfection in simplicity by using fresh seasonal ingredients in modern French cuisine. The bar has an extensive list of cocktails and a menu of tantalizing nibbles available until 1 a.m. But leave space for a cake from the patisserie counter, where French classics such as the Paris Brest or the tarte au citron are given a makeover by top patissiers.
In the Area
A ten-minute walk down Rue Balzac will take you straight to the throbbing heart of the Champs-Elysées. While you peruse the shops, make sure you stop at the Ladurée tearooms for a taste of their legendary macarons. Head down the Champs in the direction of the Grand Palais, where you’ll find wonderful exhibitions ranging from 20th-century artists such as Georges Braque to the history of Cartier jewelry. Just next door is the aptly named Petit Palais, also host to temporary shows as well as a rich permanent collection that spans painting from the Renaissance to the 19th century. At the entrance to the Jardins des Tuileries you’ll find the Musée de l’Orangerie, with its focus on 20th-century art. If you’re feeling peckish, stop off for an Italian bite at the Tuileries’ Café Renard.
