Silicon Valley big shots, Stanford alums and parents dig this stylish sleep with Mediterranean predilections
Taking inspiration from traditional Mediterranean villas, the four-story, ochre-washed Garden Court is built around a terra-cotta fountain in the courtyard, in the heart of leafy downtown Palo Alto. The lobby has the feel of a drawing room, with rugs and a big stone fireplace — you’d never guess the hotel was built in the 1980s.
Bed & Bath
This Old World look ends in the lobby, though, because in 2010 the guestrooms were gutted down to the studs, and Spanish hotel designer Pablo Paniagua led a major revamp. The spacious rooms mix contemporary and traditional textures, most notably in the bold carpeting, which features interlocking white squares on navy blue or chocolate brown — like the Givenchy logo exploding across the floor. The bathrooms get high marks for the floor-to-ceiling marble and stainless steel wall sconces, but they lack bathtubs. Most rooms have big French doors that open onto balconies filled with wrought iron patio furniture, overlooking the hotel’s central courtyard.
Little details set the Garden Court apart from Silicon Valley’s big box chain hotels. Think Peet’s Coffee & Tea Service and assorted pastries on every floor, desk drawers filled with office supplies, and fresh gardenias and locally made chocolates on the bed at turndown. There’s free WiFi, multiple cordless phones, iPod docks and wall-mounted plasma TVs that show only high-def programming.
