Midcentury motel turned hipster hangout with vintage digs and a rock ’n’ roll poolside scene
The Ace Palm Springs is simply fun—a cool hotel in a cool town. This former 1960s Howard Johnson has been updated with all the accoutrements required by the hipster set, rocking a retro ’60s vibe while rooms are a little more flea-market chic. Whitewashed guest rooms are kitted out with vintage furniture, hand-printed canvas bed throws, old-school prints, and plantation shutter-style walls, whose bathrooms come with cozy robes and amenities from Rudy’s Barbershop and views come courtesy of the mountains all around Palm Springs. Standard Kings are equipped with radios and turntables (and a pile of cool vinyl). For extra lounge space, book a Patio Room for a living area and patio decked out with rugs, potted plants, and sofas. The pool scene here sizzles morning, noon, and night thanks to the sexy clientele, yurt cabanas, DJs spinning dance tunes, and ice cream truck-turned-bar that serves alcoholic snow cones, naturally. Bust out the flip-flops and Ray-Bans, because this isn’t your Rat Pack’s Palm Springs. Things verge on rambunctious but never get obnoxious. The scene is accessible and simultaneously exclusive, like some kind of awesome summer camp. A big perk is that the Ace is very dog-friendly. In fact, it’s the only hotel around that seems to actually prefer that you bring a dog. This not only adds to the laid-back atmosphere, but a bark can sometimes be the perfect conversation starter.

Nearby there are some great spots: Wang’s in the Desert has the best happy hour around, and Spa Resort Casino rocks a classic casino scene. For a caffeine and muffin fix, hit Café au Lait at Koffi, the local pet-friendly hangout. Clear your mind at the Indian Canyons, with more than 15 miles of spectacular desert oases to explore. And for desert-battered skin, head to Ace's Feel Good Spa and book the Superfood Revitalizing Facial, which revives your skin with raw living botanical ingredients.
