How to Get There
There was much that I loved about the experience of our four days at Matakauri., The food, the staff and the spectacular setting were top notch and I could not give the lodge less than five stars. However, there were a few small issues, probably due more to my sense of 'value for money' than to the Lodge itself. Our suite was lovely with beautiful views and a comfortable bed. Our room was cleaned well and discretely by staff who seemed to know when when we vacated it - even for a short time. Everyone was gracious and charming. Most of the staff seemed to be Europeans or Americans on a working holiday and had they not been so busy, I would have liked to talk to them a bit more about their experiences in NZ. The breakfast food was excellent with cereals, fresh and tinned fruit and hot breakfast options. (however,I would have also liked some berries!) and the dinner experiences were all fine dining with plenty of flexibility on the menu. However, although I I am a foodie, by the time I left, I had started to feel more like a healthy meal rather than the high end dinner without much fibre or many vegetables. For a price, the lodge will arrange activities such as bungy jumping or helicopter excursions but most did not appeal to us and we were glad that we had a car. otherwise, there would have been little to do at the lodge itself except read There is a walk at the lake's edge which occupied us for a couple of hours and there was also the option of going in the opposite direction. However, with a car, we were free to explore the beautiful area around Queenstown and find walks in other areas. The spa was good but prices were expensive. Given the cost, It was surprising that wine was not included in the tariff -although to be fair, had I read the fine print, i would have realized this. However, at other places of similar cost (and sometimes a lot less), the tariff was all inclusive. On balance, if money is no object and you enjoy fine dining every night and wonderful views, Matakauri Lodge is hard to fault.
Queenstown of course is simply amazing with a view every where you look. Gods country. They then take it up a notch with luxury lodges that are not done to this level any where else. Matakauri in particular is superb with every comfort you can imagine. The accommodation is stunning with those spectacular views from every room - including the luxurious bathtub. The food is seriously delicious with a different offering every night. The wine list dangerous with far too many temptations. I made mention that i love whitebait and souffle and voila the chef presents me with white bait fritters ( sensational ) and the best raspberry souffle I have had ( and I have had a few ). The spa is everything you want a spa to be and relaxing and attentive ( I went two days in a row for exactly the same facial it was so good ). I could go on and on about this lodge including the fabulous group of people who insure your stay exceeds your expectations, but I will finish by saying whilst not the cheapest option for accommodation definitely one of the best. Everyone should put this on their bucket list and stay at least once. I will definitely be back - possibly annually.
Bliss, bliss and more bliss. Spectacular, jaw dropping scenery (we visited in Autumn) exceptional food and attentive, warm and respectful staff. This place delivers on every level. Definitely recommend to celebrate a special occasion.
Our stay at Matakauri Lodge was the highlight of our trip. We appreciated the attention to detail, warm welcome and commitment to customer service. The Lodge, coupled with its setting and the surrounding area, made our stay one that we will remember for many years.
Rooms are spacious and well furnished. Food exceptional. Views of surrounding mountains and overlooking the lake are unbeatable. Service is excellent. Good selection of local wines and menu will fit anyone's desires...seafood, lamb, vegetarian or I was told, anything on request. Would go again if it wasn't so far.
