Dodgy area, great staff
Reviewed 2 days ago

Although the area is currently not the most safe feeling, I have heard that Portland is growing safer and cleaner. The staff and food here is amazing, that much is for sure. Michael at the front desk was wonderful as was the lunch servers in the restaurant, very attentive. High regards to the staffing decisions

Friendly Hotel in Great Location

I booked a Deluxe room with a city view. Before writing this review I went back to my reservation confirmation to be sure I was reviewing the correct room. Upon checking in I was actually not given a city view. I had not remembered that I specifically booked one, so a general lesson to me and everyone to write it down and be sure that you are getting what you paid for when booking. When I saw my view in my incorrect room I immediately called the desk to ask for a room with a city view. A step I should not have had to take, but hey were very kind and easily moved me to a room with a view.
Even though the city view is much much better than looking at the interior walls (hotel interior walls and roof tops look better in even NYC), the city view isn't much either. So be aware. I didn't think this part of Portland was much to look at, to say the least.
Otherwise, I liked the boutique hotel. It is close to plenty of shops, restaurants and food trucks. It was modern- think concrete walls and reclaimed wood. Sparse furnishing, but not quite as minimal as Scan design. The bed was comfortable and I had a larger than usual sofa and a nice desk. Plenty of charging options including USB at the desk and the bed. The bathroom was spacious. One sink, but lots of vanity space to spread out. However, there was no make up mirror and that bathroom wasn't really well lit for a woman who needs to get ready in proper light. Be prepared to spend a little extra time getting it right for a business meeting or night out. The rest of the room was very well lit. I really liked that they had refillable soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner and body wash containers instead of those tiny little bottles. Better for the environment and easier to deal with when trying to clean up. The linens were nice on the bed and in the bathroom, and the robe was comfortable, but a bit wide for a smaller woman and awkward to tie.
Walls are a bit thin, so I could hear most everything the couple next to me was saying, which was annoying. Thankfully, we seemed to be on a similar schedule, up early, quiet at night. The street was not so quiet at night, so if you don't care about a "view" (like I said, not mch a view anyway), you might book one of the inside rooms instead.
Room service was swift, what a nice change!
The exercise room is pretty big for such a small hotel, located on the lower level, and rather dark. It was a better option for my morning run when it was still dark out than running outside. The river is nearby and fine for the day, but pretty sketchy in the dark. The workout room is also open 24 hours, which is great! But lights are on a motion sensor, so after 30 minutes I had to get off the treadmill momentarily to make the light go back on! It was kinda funny but a little disconcerting.
Staff was very friendly and helpful. They seemed to know the town well, so they gave good advise. It seemed the advise was authentic, meaning they didn't seem to be the kind of employees who are told where to direct their guests for a hotel kick back as is so often seen in city hotels.
Check out was quick and my bill accurate. They have newspapers at the desk in the am, which I really like, especially when getting on a flight.
Those few little challenges are why I gave the hotel 4 stars instead of 5. Overall, I would recommend the hi lo as a nice boutique hotel and great alternative to a big box hotel. I'll take a little noise and few odd details over any sterile run of the mill hotel anytime.

A hip gem downtown

I stayed at the HiLo in Portland and enjoyed it on many levels. First let me say all staff were gracious and friendly. Rooms are big with a lot of light and have nice touches. Radiant heated floors, huge TV, lovely showers and great bath products. I ate breakfast each day and dinner once and it was wonderful. Location is an easy walk to anything and the car park is large directly across the street. They offer we 2 newspapers each day and the lounge and lobby areas are both inviting. Wifi is free and fast. If you have Hulu or Netflx you can access them on the TV using your account. A great place to stay

Hip heart of Portland

A perfect spot for a short stay in Portland. Seriously cool decor downstairs, and minimally designed spacious rooms. Well located near some great eating options - Pine Street Market, Afuri, coffee from Stumptown and the famous Voodoo Doughnuts. A short walk to the city centre. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit to Portland!

Extremely Disappointed In How They Handle Incorrect Charges
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I stayed at the Hi-Lo Hotel from November 10 to November 12, 2018. While the staff were friendly during our stay and the room was satisfactory, how they are handling an incorrect charge on my credit card has left a sour taste in my mouth.

I was charged for two nights stay and emailed an invoice to that effect. They also charged me for valet parking, a service I did not use, without providing an invoice. In effect, they billed my credit card for a service that even they have no record of providing.

I've followed up with the hotel twice since then (once through email, once by phone), and both times I was assured that the charge would be credited back onto my credit card. Two weeks later, this has not been done.

I understand that mistakes can happen. I am a reasonable person. As such, I judge a company and the service they provide by not how they act when things go right, but how they act when things go wrong.

In this case, I cannot recommend the Hi-Lo Hotel to anyone nor would I stay there again, knowing that they will not fix their mistakes. There are many other properties nearby to choose from.
