How to Get There
The Heathman Hotel is one of those old hotels with a great track record. When you are traveling to Portland and are looking for a "real" Portland experience, you think of this place. Sadly, when we arrived, the building was clad in scaffolding. Worse yet, people were working outside our windows, so it required blinds to be pulled at all times. The lobby was a wreck.
There are good things. The restaurant is new and served up a fine breakfast. The staff was kind. But our room was undesirable. We were put on the 3rd floor. DON'T TAKE A ROOM ON THE 3RD FLOOR.
There was a constant thumping. A deep, guttural thumping in the background of our afternoons. Our naps. Pretty much everything. Saturday, while the crew was on the scaffolding outside our window (yes, they worked on Saturday as well), we thought it was construction noise. Big, deep thumps. Sunday, it continued. We came to realize the fitness center was on the second floor and the thumping was free-weights being dropped on the ground directly below us. Brilliant strategy, putting a fitness center with free weights in an aged hotel.
So we would forego our afternoon naps and hope for a good night's sleep. Sadly, at 2AM I was awoken by our neighbors doing what neighbors do at 2AM on a Saturday night. Only it seemed like they were in the room with us. It lasted a full hour, which impressed me, but nevertheless, I would have rather been sleeping.
So, free weights during the day. Paper-thin walls at night.
Although this is a great location, there are many other hotels in Portland that offer better for the same price. A very sad weekend experience for us when we paid top dollar in hopes of having a quiet, luxurious stay.
Super close by to all the places we wanted to check out,, so we thought this would be our best hotel choice.
Once we checked in, wow! Super helpful concierge and room service, bed was super comfortable, bathroom is very pretty. Would definitely come back next time I'm in town!
We enjoyed our stay at the Heathman in downtown Portland. After getting our bearings, we realized we could walk to just about everything, which was great. The staff were tremendously friendly and helpful. I love the offering of a local brew upon check-in! We also took advantage of the "text concierge," which immediately handled our requests for towels and tissues. The hotel was still under construction, but it did not discourage our visit one bit.
Located in centre of town. Close to shops, food and public transport. Excellent for short stay to experience Portland in a couple of days. 2 blocks from the train from the airport. Quiet and secure. Staff were professional. Able to get us into our room an hour before scheduled check in. Great comfortable bed. Massive tv in room. Great fitness room with new equipment. Loved the peloton bikes and climbing wall. Yes, climbing wall! Value for money in quality hotel. Bathroom small but functional. Reminded me of NY hotels. Loved the standalone shower, not in a bathtub (first proper shower in the 3 weeks we’ve been in the USA on vacation). Would recommend and stay again.
Well-run friendly customer focussed hotel located in downtown Portland. Currently in the midst of refurbishment which limits access to some of te facilities but didn’t affect our experience.
The bar is particularly good, with an excellent range of beers and decent food. Good gym. Valet parking is a little pricey.
