How to Get There
My family surprised me for my birthday with a weekend at this hotel. The facility was great, the rooms immaculate, the view was beautiful, and Stephanie at the front desk was just fabulous. She was helpful, courteous and surprised me with champagne and strawberries in my room to help us celebrate.
Well, I am staying in this fantastic location. Very beautiful. I am here for an international conference and the only thing I asked was an adaptor (either UK or European) to be able to use my Laptop and work. Well apparently this 5star hotel does not have any, while hosting a Software world conference. I can say that travelling in all around the world and staying in much less luxury hotels, it is really surprising that this one in which a room costs over 250$ the answer from the receptionist has been: sorry, we do not have any!!!!! Very disappointed!!!!! Please catch up with the world!
The room was nice. The bathroom was actually pretty nice but the shower door design was strange and made it hard to have two in the bathroom at one time. The outside looked a lot like they reconditioned an old hotel. Outside entrance for each room. Noisy tile hallway make for loud walking past the room. Not sure what the main towers were like. It was good and I am glad we didn’t pay full price for the room.
Firstly, this is fairly good hotel - a typical Marriott property and with a very friendly staff. Additionally, it has a great location. It is right across the Fashion Island Mall. It is also fairly closed to downtown Newport Beach, Balboa Island, Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach. The Hotel also has a free shuttle to one of the beaches. At this point I forget which one but it is a useful service. Most of the attractions are nearby and usually under $10 by Uber or Lyft Ride.
The Fashion Island mall is walking distance and is an excellent outing for shopping, dining and walking, especially during good weather.
Now the reasons for rating this Hotel 3 starts vs higher.
I am a Platinum Elite member and have visited and stayed at many Marriott properties worldwide. This property for the rates it charges requires an upgrade and remodeling. The hotel is more of a business property with a weird layout. It caters a lot to the business travelers and the conferences. Even when we were there they had Motown conference. It also charges $30 as resort fee. It is clearly on their web site, but this is rather expensive to an already expense room rate.
The breakfast lounge for a Platinum member is not up to par, especially given the size of the property. The breakfast in the regular downstairs location is very expensive and the buffett area is not very attractive and kind of dimly lit.
Depending on which tower you end up in, the room with an Ocean view can be misleading. The ocean is simply too far to enjoy the view.
The property is dated as also mentioned in several other reviews. The pool and Jacuzzi area are well maintained but the ambiance not befitting the 4 or 5 star property.
The staff is friendly and courteous. The staff in the downstairs restaurant is very helpful, accommodating and a joy to have them serve you. They epitomize customer service.
Overall, I would have rated this property 4 or 5 stars:
1. The price one ways automatically deminds and have higher expectations. The $30 resort fee further adds to those expectations.
2. The hotel requires remodeling.
3. The lounge needs to get better and significantly add more varietry for breakfast.
4. The property need to advertise that it is a business hotel and recreation travelers are likely to feel intrusive and surrounded by droves of professional and
Watch out for the sneaky hidden resort fees and the misleading price of the cost of the rooms per night!! This includes a resort free of $30 per day + tax. Since we are required to pay this amount, I find it very sneaky that it's not included in the overall rate of the rooms but rather one has to “scroll down” to find the message. Then there are the sneaky room charge fees (also hidden in the small print on the room menu). The worst part is the price of the room is based on an average rate per night and is not the actual amount. Our room was listed as $249 (or so I thought) per night + tax. We stayed 5 nights. We were billed $239, $249, $319, $349, $239 + tax. It’s very clear that Marriott takes advantage of the fact that people don’t read the fine print. Not to mention I booked direct so as to avoid all of the above.
