Overview

A centrally-located Newport hotel that makes it easy to shop, play, or indulge at its in-house spa

The Lowdown

Its name may conjure up images of a tropical escape, but the 295-room Island Hotel is actually located in Newport Center, a 600-acre development along the Pacific coast that is chock-full of Fortune 500 companies. So you’d expect the conference facilities, buzzing lounge where deals are made over the martini of the day, and the locally-sourced fare at the Oak Grill. What you might be surprised by are the off-duty pursuits, from the nine different types of massages on offer at the spa, the outdoor fireplace by the heated pool and the live DJ jams at the Aqua Lounge.

In the Area

Disneyland and Knott’s Berry Farm are nearby, but many hotel guests prefer to get a taste of adventure out on the water while fishing, whale watching, or catching rays aboard an impressive chartered yacht. Plus there’s horse racing at one of the five nearby tracks including Hollywood Park and Santa Anita. But the most popular competitive sport in Newport Beach just may be shopping, thanks to Fashion Island, an outdoor, oceanfront shopping and entertainment center steps from the hotel, where you can pick up everything from a scented candle to a Cadillac. It’s also home to restaurants including Rick Bayless’ Red O and Fig & Olive.

Interesting hotel and location. If you like to shop Fashion Island Mall has plenty. Not my cup of tea. I would prefer a location on the beach or golf course. The staff is good. The food I ate was above average. The Aqua Lounge and the pool side lounge are fun. The reasons I didn’t give this hotel 5 Stars; 1st night the AC in my room didn’t work. They did fix it the next day. The rooms need updating.
One positive is you are a short Car ride to great beaches, John Wayne Airport and all kinds of great restaurants.

I stayed at Fashion Island for business and then my son a couple weeks later. The location, Staff and amenities are First Class. Managers are visible and assisting with anything you need. Truly a Home away from Home. My kids only want to stay there now! Thank you again to the Hotel & Staff for making a memorable visit...........see you next year!

Grew to like it

We were staying for 6 days for work purposes and at first i didnt think i was going to like it. It next to a shopping mall which some might see as a benefit but not my usual preference. I would see its a very mixed clientelle ranging from families to party goers depending on the night of the week.
It was in a great location for us as we were driving to Anaheim each day for work. Its in easy reach by car or taxi to a lot of costal towns and nice restaurants such as San Clemente, Dana Point,Corona del mar, Laguna, Huntington and of course Newport and Belboa Beach.
The room was spacious and well appointed and very clean. The bar area is usually pretty lively and has very good waiters and weather permitting there are some lovely outdoor areas with firepits and live music. The bar turns into a bit of a night club Friday and saturday which involves some very interesting characters. The Oak restaurant is pretty good for general low key food and service very friendly. Its a suedo sports bar. Breakfast is taken there and is decent. Orange juice superb. i wasnt super fond of the pool area as there were quite a few families using it on the day we went. I think families with large groups of young children can be a bit blind to other guests needs. The gym is very well appointed indeed. Even ended up eating in a restaurant in the Mall which was quite high end.
We will be returning the same time next year for work and will 100% use this hotel.

A great business hotel

I travel to SoCal a few times a year and always stay at Fashion Island even if it means driving a little further each day. The hotel is in great shape and the rooms seem to all have been renovated over the last few years. The staff is attentive and they make it very easy to do everything one might donon a business trip. The health club is good and the pool is a nice to have though I don’t think I’ve ever been in it. I offen start my day with a run and live the fact that before entering the lobby, I’m handed a cold bottle of water.

Views of Newport Beach will be remembered forever

I stayed here even though I live close by because my house was having some repairs. What a treat. It was like a 5 star vacation in my own home=town. Everything was perfect at check in and the lobby was so elegant. The rooms were awesome and beds were so plush. Fashion Island for shopping is so close you can almost touch it from your room.. The food was great.
