Overview

Magnificent views of yachts docking in Newport Harbor and luxe spa treatments in the OC’s nautical capital

The Look

The AAA four-diamond resort has only been around since 2003, but it’s adjacent to The Balboa Bay Club, a private club whose members have included Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. The classic, Old World elegance that attracted the stars of yore shines through at the newer resort, and especially at Duke’s Place, named for the resort’s most famous member, John Wayne. It’s a great spot to sip one of the resort’s signature drinks — the Duke’s Cocktail or a BBC (short for Balboa Bay Club) mai tai, perhaps? — while taking in the sounds of local jazz musicians.

Bed & Bath

Furnished balconies in Bay View rooms make a memorable escape with magnificent views of multimillion-dollar yachts docking in Newport Harbor as the sun sets. Standard and Courtyard guestrooms are also a treat; all are decorated with understated nautical flair, highlighted by plantation shutters opening to courtyard or pool views.

Beyond

Dinner is at the award-winning First Cabin restaurant, where Austrian chef Josef Lageder serves up delectable morsels of fresh mahi-mahi and dry aged filet mignon with béarnaise sauce. The spa is an escape unto itself. Treatments include a volcanic clay wrap, a caviar facial and the signature OC Body Scrub for a skin-refreshing dose of orange blossoms and Vitamin C followed by some more lounge time by the courtyard pool.

My stay here was fabulous. From when I walked in being greeted my Dominique and the staff pouring wine. To my pool side appetizers. The staff the views of the water was top notch. Thank you Balboa bay for hiring such great people to be the face for your establishment. Special thanks to Dominique for giving me awesome suggestion to dining and nightlife locations. Xoxo ❤️

Blast by the Bay

Top notch facility and amenities. Secure and safe. Truly lives up to entrance placard that states “...best in the world”. Pool area amazing, morning yoga was great, paddle board the bay, and every day is an amazing car show. Will return again and recommend to family and friends. Well done.

MIXED FEELINGS

We arrived for one night of a cousin's getaway. Booked a double Queen with a full bay view. The room was having electrical issues so they graciously upgraded to a very large suite, previously occupied by Tim McGraw. Tiny partial bay view but very large so why not! Everything seemed to be going well until room service arrived. Unacceptable presentation. Dried up spaghetti and Turkey balls. No sauce and horribly overcooked. Turkey sandwich with thick slabs of processed turkey meat. Stale bread to boot. Really surprising. The server set the table beautifully and was very kind. But we still had to call and inform the kitchen and they offered to re-make the items. We graciously declined ad they removed the charges, which was the right thing to do.
So when I say MIXED FEELINGS - that is true. Room was clean. Every single Staff member was friendly and efficient. Breakfast in the bar Sunday morning was excellent! Obviously a different chef. Would I stay there again? Probably. And would dine out at one of the popular restaurants in the area. Unfortunately, we had no time to check out the Spa and Spa services. Oh well...
