The Review

Live like a star at this two-bedroom villa that opens up to the sand and the Pacific. The place feels like a small beachside mansion, and while you’ll have it all to yourself, the neighborhood offers plenty of plenty of other perks.

Bordered by the Pacific Coast Highway and the coast itself, the villa sits between the aptly named Pacific Edge Hotel and Beach House restaurant, a local landmark that was once the home to Hollywood character actor Slim Summerville. The hotel — formerly a dilapidated ’60s motel — has been given a much-needed makeover by the hip California-based Joie de Vivre hospitality chain. And whereas many of the hotel’s ocean-facing rooms are brightly painted studios with balconies, the property’s pièce de résistance is somewhat hidden.

The decades-old edifice was recently gutted and rebuilt from the inside out, while the wooden Craftsman-style exterior was smartly preserved. I thought I was merely staying in one of the hotel’s larger suites, so when I walked through a white gate and was greeted by a huge green house I had to catch my breath. Upon entering, I walked down a long hallway to a sunken living room with French doors that open to a sprawling deck overlooking the ocean.

The furniture is elegant casual, bathed in baby blues and sea greens with understated seashell motifs. A formal dining room and a fairly simple kitchen (no real cooking facilities here) round out the downstairs. Upstairs, two bedrooms carry on the nautical theme, with old oars set above one of the beds and shells in large jars on one mantel. The master bedroom is enormous, with a field of soft carpeting, a huge, roaring fireplace and a walk-in closet big enough to live in. There’s also a fireplace in the master bathroom, which enjoys skylights and large glass doorless shower. Wooden ceilings arch overhead.

In summer, beach butlers rake the sand outside, set up chaise longues and tend to guests’ every need. The hotel’s shared pool and hot tub is just to the south of the villa, and the Beach House restaurant to the north offers a room service menu for villa guests. Perhaps you can’t afford to truly live like a movie star, but this unique beachfront home makes you feel as if you’re almost there.

Impressed. Will be back!

Great place to stay. The ocean view and location are great. The staff is very courteous and friendly, thanks Julio.
The room is very nice and the overall facility is very cool. This is definitely a place I'll be back to when visiting Laguna.

We had a very pleasant stay last week at the Calypso apartment right on the beach cliffs, with fantastic views. The property and apartment was very clean. One major plus was that the common deck with ample seating and barbeque possibilities was right in front of us and the beach only stairs away. We really enjoyed our stay at this property, like a home away from home. And the staff was very friendly and helpful. Especially our agent Nasrin took time and helped us a lot when booking. She exactly understood what we were looking for. I would definitely come back and recommend this place to family and friends.

Great Laguna Spot

Hidden Laguna gem! Beautiful rooms with private beach access and a spectacular view from the elevated front deck (great for sunset). Not all room have an ocean view (ours did not - we stayed in the Lanai room) but the room was well appointed none the less. Beach chairs and umbrella - BBQ - well appointed kitchen - bathrobes - wonderful bed - luxurious towels and linens - secured parking - all the nice touches. Julio at the front desk was awesome - Check in was quick and efficient. We will be back!
