Overview

The Review

Live like a star at this two-bedroom villa that opens up to the sand and the Pacific. The place feels like a small beachside mansion, and while you’ll have it all to yourself, the neighborhood offers plenty of plenty of other perks.

Bordered by the Pacific Coast Highway and the coast itself, the villa sits between the aptly named Pacific Edge Hotel and Beach House restaurant, a local landmark that was once the home to Hollywood character actor Slim Summerville. The hotel — formerly a dilapidated ’60s motel — has been given a much-needed makeover by the hip California-based Joie de Vivre hospitality chain. And whereas many of the hotel’s ocean-facing rooms are brightly painted studios with balconies, the property’s pièce de résistance is somewhat hidden.

{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/755/prop-33440-1315859591-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The master bedroom opens to a private balcony and is filled with natural light.”}The villa is a 2,500-square-foot masterpiece of sunny California architecture. The decades-old edifice was recently gutted and rebuilt from the inside out, while the wooden Craftsman-style exterior was smartly preserved. I thought I was merely staying in one of the hotel’s larger suites, so when I walked through a white gate and was greeted by a huge green house I had to catch my breath. Upon entering, I walked down a long hallway to a sunken living room with French doors that open to a sprawling deck overlooking the ocean.

The furniture is elegant casual, bathed in baby blues and sea greens with understated seashell motifs. A formal dining room and a fairly simple kitchen (no real cooking facilities here) round out the downstairs. Upstairs, two bedrooms carry on the nautical theme, with old oars set above one of the beds and shells in large jars on one mantel. The master bedroom is enormous, with a field of soft carpeting, a huge, roaring fireplace and a walk-in closet big enough to live in. There’s also a fireplace in the master bathroom, which enjoys skylights and large glass doorless shower. Wooden ceilings arch overhead.

In summer, beach butlers rake the sand outside, set up chaise longues and tend to guests’ every need. The hotel’s shared pool and hot tub is just to the south of the villa, and the Beach House restaurant to the north offers a room service menu for villa guests. Perhaps you can’t afford to truly live like a movie star, but this unique beachfront home makes you feel as if you’re almost there.

Excellent stay

It was a great stay all around. Everything about our oceanfront villa was excellent, including the location, the view, amenities, and service in general. Also, while all staff was good, Julio specifically was very accommodating.

We'll recommend sunset cove villas without hesitation. It is one of the best options in Laguna Beach.

Beautiful beachfront Villas!

I loved this property! Modern rooms, convenient location, and right on the beach! Great common area to watch the sunset from. Wake up and walk on the beach! Lots of great dhops and restaurants nearby!

Disappointing visit - Shabby interior

I stayed in the Calypso villa for three nights. Interior was tired, worn, and stains everywhere. Carpet in bedroom was terrible; every cushion on couch and chairs had stains. Drain in shower backed up. I identified items with manager and only improvement was the shower drain.

Captivating

My partner and I were fortunate enough to stay here for a night. We're locals, but from time to time we need a little staycation. This villa was majestic. It was extraordinary to feel like we were in another place. It's quiet and private. They have a community area with stunning views of the ocean. It's not called Sunset Villa for no reason. You absolutely must watch the sunset if you even stay here. My partner and I laid out there with our glasses of wine taking it all in, remarkable. And the ocean sounds never get old.

Our room, Lanai was incredible. It was spacious, immaculate and had a ton of amenities. You also get this fabulous view of the ocean from the bed. I was amazed.

I will definitely be back!

Extraordinary Villa

I had the recent fortune to stay at Sunset Cove Villa (Lania). It is a beautiful villa with remarkable partial views of the ocean and hills in Laguna. It felt like a home away from home and as I look at condos to rent in Laguna, this becomes my standard.

The entire villa is clean, beautifully decorated and well stocked with dishes and glassware.

The bathroom is so lovely with a big tub, large window and beautiful tiling.

There was a clean large private garage available as well as a common area that directly looked out over the ocean. A remarkable place to come have breakfast or meet with friends.

There is a lot of natural light so the villa seems light and spacious.

This villa was an upgrade from a hotel room at 14 West who also owns this property. The customer service of 14 West is exceptional. Robert in particular was friendly, professional and welcoming.

All in all it was a beautiful experience one I will remember for a very long time.
