Ultimate Arabian getaway on a secluded stretch of Oman’s Musandam Peninsula, with one of the area's best spas and a slow-life philosophy
If ever there was a time and a place to max out your credit cards, Six Senses Zighy Bay is it. The indulgence starts upon arrival: guests can choose to self drive from Dubai (ill-advised over the rugged mountain pass!), use the hotel transfer (much better), motorboat from the UAE border, or paraglide from the rocky cliff right to the Gulf of Oman. (Thrill-seeking regulars have been known to leave the property and come back again, just to try a different approach.) Once you're on property, there's nowhere to go except into the tranquil sea or to the rustic but luxurious spa. Which is totally fine, because the world-renowned Six Senses Spa can relieve all the associated pains of traveling to such a remote location, and the 82 thatch rustic-luxe villas make even the call of the wild hard to resist. Days follow a typical pattern: a late-morning buffet of exotic fruits and Middle Eastern breakfast specialties (shakshuka, mezze, thick yogurt) sans shoes; lounging by the water's edge or lazing in your villa's private pool; biking on a cruiser around the sandy property; dinner on the beach. It's a great opportunity to get through Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale (the book, not the series—no Hulu here) and reconnect with whomever you traveled. Expect to chat up your chaise-longue neighbors, typically Brits who will spill stories of exotic adventures and other glamorous Arabian nights.
In the Area
Oman has become a mecca for in-the-know scuba divers. Discover unspoiled waters with Extra Divers, an international chain of diving centers with a local outpost. Better yet, book a sunset cruise through the concierge at the nearby marina. You’ll sail past the Musandam Fjords while nibbling on canapés and sipping champagne.
