Squaw Valley’s rugged mountain location provides a dramatic backdrop for this 56-room inn, originally built as a home for the 1960 Winter Olympic delegation. The place still gets plenty of attention for its slopes and snow: last winter the resort registered nearly 60 feet of the white stuff. Your room is steps from Squaw’s legendary Cable Car, which stands ready to whisk you up to 8,200 feet for first turns in the fresh Sierra Nevada powder. The bilevel cedar and glass lodge has an understated sophistication that’s characteristic of the Bay Area clientele it serves. There’s nothing flashy about it, but creature comforts are everywhere: a top-notch restaurant, in-room spa treatments, waffle stations at breakfast, mountain views, wine seminars.
Bed and Bath
Spacious Mountain View Rooms feel just as wide open as the views. Inside the inn’s 56 rooms and suites, the beds are obscured by pillowy duvets, and the spacious bathrooms are accented with hammered metal details: copper cauldrons, swirled sconces, wall hangings that resemble a medieval knight. Overall, the mash-up of rustic wood and stone with muted modern works quite well.
Beyond
The hotel has a lively bar scene and an excellent in-house restaurant, the PlumpJack Cafe, which hosts winemaker dinners throughout the year. The menu changes seasonally, but expect creations like Kobe sushi, roasted grouper with garlic-stewed greens, and three-cheese risotto with mushroom ragout and black truffle oil. The wine list is notable for hard-to-find California wines and organic, biodynamic selections — like the Arietta “Variation One” blend of Napa Valley Merlot and Syrah, the perfect end to a day spent enjoying the Sierra Nevadas.

Whether prone to the beginner and intermediate slopes or skilled enough for the legendary KT-22 steeps, you can ski the five peaks and catch the best views of North Lake Tahoe.
