How to Get There
We last stayed at the Ambassador 2 years ago, and the room and service were just as lovely as before. The proximity to downtown and Utica Square area makes it a great location if you want to shop or eat out - but the Chalk Board restaurant and bar are more than fine for staying in. We've opted for the Executive King rooms both times (804 and 603, both corner rooms) and think are worth the extra money. They welcome our small dog with a bed and treats and nominal $50 charge. We also used the hotel shuttle service - but during popular events like Oktoberfest, you have to be patient (we ended up using Uber for the return trip). This is a beautiful hotel and we will return again.
This hotel is a grand old lady. It has been thoroughly updated. The person/s who decorated it did an excellent job. The colors are soft and pleasing. Our room #707 was a corner room. It was beautiful and laid out with a lot of thought.
The staff are excellent and helpful to a fault. Example, on the Saturday that we were there, we were to go to a wedding in a town about an hour away. We were getting ready and I realized that I had forgotten to pack a tie to go with my Blazer. It was way too late to go anywhere to shop. I told Michelle at the front desk. She asked me to wait at the desk. She left and I saw her go to various parts of the hotel. She came back with a tie that saved the day. We got to the wedding on time and appropriately dressed. But that isn't the end of the story. At the wedding, we got caught in the rain. It ruined the tie. On returning the tie, I offered to pay for it. She said that there was no charge. She would take care of it.
Another person that needs recognition is Bobby. He was so patient with us. We simply could not figure out the coffee maker in our room. I'm ashamed to say that it took three trips to our room to finally get it right.
The food and drinks in the bar/restaurant were top notch.
I want to tell the bad before the good so here goes. I made reservations for my husband and I two months in advance - booked the Presidential Suite. We wanted an early check-in so I contacted the hotel the evening before our arrival. I asked if there was a possibility for an early check-in. The man I spoke with said he was sorry but someone was in the room and had paid extra $$$ for late check-out which would be 4:00 pm. Out reservation stated that our check-in was 3:00 pm. I was just calling to ask for an earlier check-in. He explained this hotel often let someone pay extra to stay late even if someone else had the room booked for 3:00 pm that day. Obviously since the person wasn't leaving room until 4:00 pm the housekeeper would need to come in and clean the room. The man said it should be ready by 5:00. (Remember, we had the room supposedly at 3:00 pm). We were paying over $350 for this room and now we are told we can't really get into the room until 5:00 pm or after. When I asked if this was normal, he told me they did this all the time. My husband and I are retired and we travel quite a bit. I have never had this happen anywhere. Finally, I asked if we could book a different room. He did find us another room and so we ended up staying at the hotel, although we had to give up the Presidential Suite. We will never stay at this hotel again because of the treatment we received. They are interested in receiving a few extra dollars rather than giving fair service to customers. Now the good. Our room was very nice, although we lost a bathtub because this room only had a shower and the Presidential Suite had a tub. The room was very pretty and clean. The bed was comfortable. We also enjoyed the restaurant. We ate there twice and both times it was delicious. I rarely write reviews but I wanted to warn others that you may arrive at the hotel thinking you are getting the published check-in time only to find someone has paid a little extra to stay late. The hotel will let them stay without any regard for you!!!
