How to Get There
We stayed a week in this wonderful place! Better priced than Disney next door! We stayed on the ninth floor and could watch ships and boats from the condo! There are four safe lagoons nearby to swim in and a boat basin that’s full of fish to see!
Our 50th Anniversary!
We stayed in the Ocean Tower, #1403, and we loved the villa. It had all the kitchen amenities we needed so we only went out for a few meals. There is a Safeway, Target and Costco about a 10 minute drive so food shopping is very convenient. And the views are amazing! Even though the Ocean Tower is behind the Beach Tower, you can still see plenty of the Pacific; we spent a lot of time on our lanai, just gazing out on the ocean. A heard a lot of people say they saw whales in the distance.
Our unit, #1403, had 2 bedrooms, one had a king bed, the other 2 twin beds. It also had 2 bathrooms, all very nicely appointed. Our one complaint would be the a/c was difficult to control and at night we felt a little chilly.
There are 2 pools; one is supposed to be a quiet pool for adults, but with so many families there that rule wasn’t really followed. The other pool had a small “sand beach” at one end where families with toddlers could play. There is no restaurant but there is a bar, Mai Tai’s are expensive ($13 per drink) but definitely worth it to watch the sunset on the beach while sipping a Mai Tai! There is also a workout facility which was nice; there is also a walking/biking path that goes around Ko Olina that is nice.
The Beach Villas sit between the Marriot and 4 Seasons so you can visit their hotels for restaurant and spa services. There is also a small “village” (i.e. strip mall) in walking distance that has shops and restaurants. The beach in front of the villas is very nice, manmade with a manmade bay that is blocked by a rocky wall so that the water inside the bay is very calm and good for swimmers of all abilities, plus near the rock wall there are a lot of fish so snorkeling here is great (most villas have beach chairs, snorkel equipment, and beach towels).
For a quiet family vacation, I definitely recommend the Beach Villas at Ko Olina. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but cheaper than the resorts and higher end hotels, and you save money by having your meals in the villa. We would definitely come back here.
The Beach Villas at Ko Olina are nice condos. We were there mid to late August. The property was quiet and not overly crowded. Upon arrival on a Sunday, the pool was a little busy but on other days there were less people. Just to be clear, these are condo units and you will not have some amenities of a full-service hotel. There is a small circle driveway to park for check-in. Lobby area is small and the only purpose appears to be for the check-in process. I booked the condo through Air B&B but there appears to be multiple ways to book such as through VRBO, Trip Advisor, etc. Some of the units are handled by property management companies while with others you deal with the property owner. Our unit was handled by a property management company and a greeter was assigned to meet us in the lobby after we checked in. We contacted the greeter after we arrived on the island and that gave them time to meet us at the condo after our drive from the airport in our rental car.
The greeter showed us to our parking spot in the underground garage. To open the arm to the garage, you use the room key. We stayed in the unit closest to the water (Beach Tower) and the parking for that section appeared to be only in the 2-level underground garage. Parking spots were ample size and you will have an assigned spot. There are some spots that have a column on one side and those could appear to be a little tighter but not bad. A short walk to the elevator area which the entry door is again accessed using your room key. Elevator is also controlled by your room key. We stayed in a ground floor unit just behind the front cap of the beach side condos. I was hoping for a more direct access to the beach but it wasn’t too bad. You can go out of your room, down the hall back towards the lobby area, and then through the pool area to get to the beach. Beach access from the condos are through a card controlled gate (both in and out). There is a small bar close to the pool and near the gate to the beach. Looks like the bar has the typical drink offerings and a few snack type food items.
The inside of the condos are very nice and the layout appears to be similar for all of them although some are 3 bedroom while others are 2 bedroom. Our unit was a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with plenty of room for our group of 4. Some 2 bedroom units may have a sleeper sofa to allow for more people but you’ll have to check the listing for your particular unit. Nice kitchen, dining room, and living room area. Our unit had a nice lanai which opened to a small yard area with plenty of grass and foliage. Not much of a view to the ocean since the unit was on the ground floor and some plants blocked much of the water view.
There is no included housekeeping service but our management company could get a company to service our unit for an additional fee (we did not get the service).
There is a small shopping center down the street which offers several stores and restaurants. The ABC Store has a good selection of souvenirs, food, drinks, and other supplies.
The Marriott is a 10-minute walk one direction along the beach sidewalk while the Disney property is about the same distance on the other side. There is a Four Seasons property just past the Disney hotel.
The other properties to either side definitely had more people but also offered other amenities such as small shopping stores, dining options, activities, beach rentals, etc.
We used the Beach Villas as a base for island tourist activities. Upon returning to the condo in the late afternoon, we would enjoy the beach in front of the condo or the swimming pool.
We chose this location because of the nice area, nice beaches, and nice accommodations. The main “downside” of this location is the distance from the other areas of the island. While travel from the airport to the condo was about 35 minutes on a Sunday, you can add 20-30 additional minutes on a typical weekday. Traffic on H1 is very heavy between 6-9am and 3-6pm during the week. Traffic will add about 30 minutes to your typical commute if you travel during these busy times to/from the Ko Olina area. Examples - North shore will take you about 75 minutes via H1 & H2, Hanuama Bay about 90 minutes via H1, East shore (Kualoa Ranch) about 90 minutes via H1 & H3.
We have visited this property 13 times now. Always in the October - March time frame. We usually stay on the 14th floor of the back building, but have spent one week in a unit right on the beach, above the palm trees. Beach unit had complete unobstructed ocean view, but much less quiet than the units higher, set back from the beach.
We have stayed as low as the 11th floor, and the sunsets have all been unobstructed. The beach tower is in the way of part of the ocean view. We keep going back because HNL is easy to get to, the property is 30 minutes West of airport, yet it’s quiet, the adult pool is quiet, the beach is uncrowded, and the units are clean and well kept.
It is beautiful and safe to walk up and down the shoreline as far as you can, and anything on Oahu is a relatively short drive away. It’s easy to spend your days drinking caffein on the lanai in the AM and eating dinner in the same place, watching the sunsets, waiting for that cool green flash (see “double” flash below) that is not uncommon to this location.
For now the property has not been allowed to become “dated” like so many others in Hawaii. We enjoy it well as a couple usually, but have had friends/family stay with us in one of the extra bedrooms quite enjoyably.
Finally, we like to travel around the world, and each time we do, we find ourselves measuring the current place against the KoOlina Beach Villas, and they usually don’t stack up.
Most of the pictures you find on the internet of the units are accurate.
If your family is looking to stay away from the crowds, look no further than the Beach Villas at Ko Olina. Situated on one of the middle Ko Olina lagoons, the Beach Villas is located next to the Marriott, Disney Aulani and the Four Seasons Hotel. It is most definitely the quietest of all the hotels with no real amenities on site besides a gym, grills for cooking, two fabulous pools, one pool bar and a gorgeous koi pond. The villas come with a private parking spot and some have sweeping views of the lagoons. The actual villa we stayed in was a penthouse suite-complete with two full bedrooms and two full baths. The decor was gorgeous complete with a koa wood kitchen, tiles floors and granite and quartz counters. Our lanai was huge! The location of Ko Olina, while a perfect quiet getaway for our family, is off the beaten path and it’s about a 35 minute drive into Honolulu and over an hour to KAILUA town. However, there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from at the nearby hotels and shopping center across the way, so the location should not be a deterrent. We highly recommend this location for families with young children as well as teenagers. We also loved the paved walking trail that allows you to visit the other hotels or just get in a morning walk.
