My wife and I stayed at the The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Nusa Dua, Bali. We had an amazing experience. On arrival, we felt special. The staff was so kind. Not just nice, but kind and caring – as they just really cared that we had an amazing time. The butler service, awesome – a shout out to Dewa – always asking is everything perfect? and made it so.!! We had a nice surprise for our anniversary; welcome flowers, baskets of fruit, rose petals, a room upgrade, and some how we had many of the staff congratulating us all week long on our anniversary. The resort is beautiful, but the staff made it stand out. Special recognition to those that made our stay special: Dickey in the Bar – always welcomed us back after a day touring in Bali (with so many people how does he know our names?) , Smiling Amy teaching us to speak “Balinese” at the Arwana restaurant, staff at the Spa (you have to experience), and Verina and the whole concierge staff. We are already planning to return.
We came to the Laguna for the first half of our honeymoon. We weren’t made to feel extra special considering it was our honeymoon – other hotels had offered a range of free dinners, spa treatments etc., but we were only offered the opportunity to have breakfast on our room balcony free of charge one morning. The breakfast was good; a wide selection.
The beach was great – everything was super clean and crystal clear waters. As the beach is a lagoon however, the tide is very low for most of the day and you can’t swim in it; at best, it is about knee height. We did find out a few days before we left though that if you go to the beach first thing, around 7/8 am, then the tide is high and you can have a swim J The vendors on the beach were relentless and got very annoying – considering it is a 5 star hotel you would expect that they would be moved on, or be less intrusive at least.
The lagoon pools were extensive and we liked the saltwater pool in particular. You had to pay extra for the beach huts though – this is disappointing considering we had already paid enough for being in a 5 star hotel. It was great that the hotel has a policy though whereby if sun loungers are unoccupied for an hour, then the towels are removed. This discourages people from hogging the sun loungers, which is a good thing.
The rooms were disappointing; very dated. Our bathtub was also stained, which is not good considering it is a 5 star hotel. I think other reviews also mentioned the rooms being dated.
The bars were good, although they did pretty much clear out by 10:30pm (they close at 11pm). So it’s not somewhere you would stay if you wanted more atmosphere in the evenings. Having said this we were never rushed to leave in the evenings. The drinks were expensive, but there was a good selection. I think the fact that the bars cleared out by 10:30pm is reflective of the fact that this is more of a family hotel.
The service was the best thing about this hotel. It was the first time we had experienced Balinese hospitality, and – wow. Everyone is just genuinely friendly and service is always with a smile. Our favourite place was Cornerstone; we went here for lunch every day. A special thank you to Aprin and his team, for our fabulous lunches and cold brew coffee, always with a smile.
Would we visit again? Nusa Dua, definitely. Laguna, not so sure. If we were to come again to Nusa Dua we would definitely try a different hotel to see if we got better value for money and less dated rooms, with more extras to make us feel special on our holiday.
