How to Get There
We enjoyed our stay at Alexander House. Three things made it special for me: characterful spacious rooms, fabulous canal-side location, and delightful staff with a positive and friendly attitude.
Our group had 2 rooms and both were comfortable and beautifully serviced. We arrived from rainy Novgorod and immediately felt at home from the warm welcome.
AH is close to public transport and an easy walk to shops and attractions such as the Marinsky Theatre. The concierge provides a great service for advice on transport and attractions.
One thing not quite as good - the food was not at the same standard as other aspects of AH. The breakfast pastries were chewy, limited fruit variety, sugary flavoured yoghurts etc. The dinner menu was OK but it was limited and the quality of meals good, but not great.
But overall we were so happy with AH; it enhanced our experience of one of the world's famous cities. I would definitely recommend AH and will return if I'm back in St Petersburg.
This was a delightful, unique, and charming hotel. All the staff was very helpful and everyone spoke excellent English. Very romantic. Wonderful small restaurant inside with authentic, delicious Russian food. I'd highly recommend it.
Our stay was perfect from beginning to end.
We arrived in a bit of a frenzy, as we'd caught a Yandex taxi from the airport but an error meant that our bank cards weren't working with the app. Without any cash on hand, we had no way to pay the driver and were panicking about what to do. When we arrived at the hotel and explained the situation, the two staff members who were waiting to greet us were very quick to help and lent us some money.
Our first impression was brilliant, in terms of the beautiful building that is Alexander House.
Check in was very pleasant, as we were given a brief tour of the amenities available in the hotel and shown to our room—the complimentary cup of traditional Russian tea was a nice touch.
We were lucky enough to stay in the excellent Amsterdam room (a corner room on the top floor, which I believe was refurbished shortly after our stay) and had a great view of the stunning Trinity Cathedral. The room itself was wonderful, immaculately clean and very spacious, with an exceedingly comfortable bed. The bathroom and shower were also very good.
Breakfast each morning was fantastic, with a wide range of freshly prepared food. Everything we tried over our three mornings was delicious.
The location is very good without being in the absolute centre of the city—it only took us about 20 minutes to walk to Palace Square.
The hotel restaurant is simple and relatively cheap, but superb. I highly recommend ordering ukha, beef stroganoff, and the ham and cheese sandwich.
The best thing about Alexander House, however, is the service. We were warmly greeted every time we walked in or out of the hotel and every staff member that we interacted with was genuinely pleased to help us.
I am happy to say that Alexander House is the best hotel I've ever stayed at, and I would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Saint Petersburg.
