Luxury and Understated Elegance

We (party of 4) booked a private dining room at Kauri Cliffs to celebrate my 70th birthday on a Monday afternoon. We arrived at the Lodge and were escorted to our private dining room overlooking the ocean and the golf course. We were asked about food preferences when we made the reservation, but we had none. We knew that the 3 course meal would cost about $100NZ per person.
The service was wonderful and attentive without being intrusive. The menu for the day included sashimi options, venison, and dessert. We began with a complimentary started plate.
We also ordered two bottles of white NZ wine. The Gewurztraminer was good, but the 2015 Te Mata Viognier, Zara, was excellent!
We dined for 3 hours! Each course was more delicious than the last. I especially enjoyed the sashimi and the venison - plated to perfection.
If you have a special occasion to celebrate, go for it! You will not be disappointed.

Ending our NZ adventure relaxing at Kauri Cliffs

At the end of a two week trip to a country like New Zealand, where you are constantly on the move from adventure to adventure, spending a few days at a property like The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs was the perfect ending. An afternoon sitting on our balcony reading and relaxing while enjoying the absolutely gorgeous views that the property offers, followed by a day on a boat (Cool Change) cruising among the Bay of Islands and all the sights that offers, created the exact mood we needed to end our time in NZ. Can’t wait to go back.

A lifetime of memories.

What an amazing Lodge this is. Staff waiting to greet you on arrival and make you feel welcome. The views are incredible and the golf course outstanding. I played the course twice. The first time was full of apprehension with long carries and steep fall offs. The second time was a charm. Enjoying the views in every direction and having a better understanding of the course layout was a magic experience. Certainly the best course I have ever played and lots of wonderful memories. The Main Homestead is a magnificent building and houses the pro shop, lounges and dining areas. The Guest Suites (more like apartments) are a short walk (or cart ride) away and surrounded by what looks like pristine rain forest and ferns. The room décor is perfect and the beds are so comfortable you won't want to leave. No air conditioning but plenty of open windows and doors providing natural breezes and a gas fire if required. The pre dinner drinks were generous and the dinner itself 5 star with all the trimmings. The Sommelier (Valeria?) was very knowledgeable and recommended some outstanding wines which we are still talking about. My wife's Great Grandfather (Robert Leslie) was one of the original owners of the Waiaua Sheep Station (now Kauri Cliffs) and the Lodge Management very kindly gave me a book covering the History of the Northland sheep station which my wife was thrilled to receive. I would highly recommend the Lodge at Kauri Cliffs for anyone looking for a luxurious Lodge holiday.

Amazing place

One of the best golf courses I have ever played. Stunning views from every hole. Absolutely loved it.
Accommodation is really nice, with very comfortable beds.
Food was excellent, barbecue on the beach was just the cherry on the cake.
I love this place, we will be back.

Amazing views and fabulous property!

Kauri Cliffs is spectacular. In terms of design, the plantation style main house is something to behold and each cottage is impeccable. The furnishings are beautiful and the entire property is perfectly maintained. It would impress even the most particular interior designer. The golf course is like Pebble Beach, only better and more fun and much less crowded. In fact we never saw another person on the course outside of our group while we were playing the front 9. Everyone on the staff was upbeat and friendly and very attentive - start to finish.
Pricing is definitely strong - but it does include breakfast, cocktail hour, and amazing 5 course dinners.
We were traveling with a group and our consensus is that a property of this stature in 2019 should have air conditioning in the rooms - hence the four stars, not 5. And we would all forego eating in the new outdoor grille - a great setting but if you want a great meal eat upstairs at dinner.
