How to Get There
Hubby treated me to a trip to Cologne to visit the Christmas Markets for my 50th birthday. We stayed at Radisson Blu. We were warned in advance that they would be having a refit and so the reception, bar and spa would be affected. Having read the reviews we decided still to go there as we wouldn't be using the spa anyway. How glad we were. We got an upgrade on our room, which was a wonderful surprise. All the staff were so friendly and helpful, giving us advice on how to get around and which were the best markets. The food at breakfast time was really nice too. Stone's throw from the main town. 25 mins walk or 3 mins to the tram stop. Only 15 mins on the train from the airport too. Lovely hotel. Would love to visit again and see the hotel when all the upgrades have been completed.
I checked in in this hotel last saturday for one night.
Once in the room i put something in the safe, as i forgot something i opened it again, at that point the battery died.
I asked if they could fix it, they couldn’t explaining that there is not engineering on weekend, but i wonder what they would do if actually my things were stucked in the safe, when i asked why immediately the first reaction was “it s not my fault it s the management” (why would you even say that)
Not big deal i thought, it was 5pm
So i asked on the phone if they can change me the room also because i wanted a double bed and this request did not come true and i couldnt leave my personal items at the reception safe.
The person on the phone told me it was not possible and that the hotel was fully booked, fair enough, i asked then if all the check in arrived, she said yes, which is impossible for a hotel at that size, i went to the desk and asked a receptionist and confronted him with people checking actually in and he actually confirmed that they preallocated all rooms in the system and that was the reason they couldn’t swap it with another guest due to arrive.
Actually the safe was a detail of minor importance, however when i asked to speak to the manager, finally a woman came to the desk, not greeting me, not smiling to whom i explained very calm what i needed, at no point she smiled or she was using any hospitality skills whatsoever, she just kept saying no, with a angry face, and when i confronted she actually lied to me 5 minutes earlier saying all check in were arrived she got very rude not a single smile or a polite greetings which would have change things, as i completely understand small issue can happen, but it doesnt cost anything being polite to guests, instead with her attitude she just made it worst, not solving the situation making me feel i was actually annoying her, again the safe was a detail, but what a bad attitude of this women, how can she even be on duty as manager
Also i asked for a big bed, they didnt have any so they offered to put the beds together, when we camme back to the rooms we found indeed the two beds together, but the one matrasses was about
5 cm less high than the other, which made it uncomfortable to sleep on.. finally in the morning i went to take a shower and one towel was dirty
I was discounted parking and offered breakfast finally in the morning when i spoke to a nice polite girl, which had nothing to do with the bad attitude of the woman the night before which did not understand the meaning of hospitality but seems just angry to be working there for whatever reason
I chose Radisson because of good ratings and 4 *. Was waiting for check in for 25 min. Staff was really nice and friendly. Room was very cold and loud from the street. Bathroom was a little bit dirty. I’m disappointed. Breakfast was really good.
This has been a go-to favorite in Koln-now the rooms are modernized and efficient. Service continues to be a strong point, specially the front desk. The lobby bar- a long favorite of road warriors- is being modernized at the moment but never fear there are a couple of temporary alternatives at the lobby level. Breakfast is good in the morning - same lobby level. This appears to be a bus tourist favorite recently, so plan check in/out a bit early as it can be a long line during rush hour. I understand the business need for bus loads of guests but management need to address a perhaps separate process. Short cab rides (approx 9euros) to old town eateries and the Dom. The Koln Messe train station is a short 10 minute do-able walk even with a rolling luggage.
A really nice modern hotel literally 100 meters from the Koln exhibition centre.
Staff are very friendly, breakfast is pricey at €25 but it’s one of the best buffets I’ve ever seen.
The bar was being renovated whilst we were there so if you are reading this review around Nov 2018 best check it’s finished .
I was with my colleague sharing a room . At 6ft 6 and 6ft 8 plus the two single beds were small Ish but comfortable..
The fitness area was good with cardio and weight equipment
