How to Get There
Good location, but that was all. Despite the price being sky high, our double room was tiny. The smallest hotel room I've ever been in. Did not have a suitcase stand. The only way we could unpack was by putting our cases on the bed. Then we had to stack one on the other to move around the room. Hanging space was minimal. The next time I want a room as small, I'll go to a prison!
Then, to add insult to injury, the tourist tax was charged as we checked out. Usually this is done when you check in, so we assumed that it had been subsumed into the cost, as it had been at our previous hotel in Berlin.
Never again will I book Sofitel
From the outside walking up to the Hotel when I arrived Tuesday evening all impressions were good. Once inside it sort of started going downhill.
The gentleman who checked me in, while pleasant was rather cold. There was no information provided to me about the Hotel and I was given my room key and pointed I the direction of the lifts.
Well, the lifts! Two old lifts that probably couldn’t fit 3 people with their luggage.
Found my room after walking down a long corridor with worn out dirty carpets, which I believe I booked was a deluxe room. No mention of an upgrade at check-in being a Platinum Accor member. Actually no mention that I was a loyalty member.
The room was, well, tight. I had a window and though it was dark I could see it looked out in a central courtyard (more about that later).
I was glad I’d booked a deluxe as a smaller room would have been claustrophobic.
The bathroom was a decent size and was modern with double basins. Probably the best part of the room.
The bed was comfortable as was the bedding.
There was a. Nespresso machine and a tiny monitor in a cupboard that I guessed was a tv. This room was actually really badly designed.
The first night as I had arrived around 6pm I thought I’d try room service. Took me a while to find the room service menu though and it was pretty sparse. I’m Vegan so I’d thought I’d call to see what options there were. Well I was told “there are none”. Not even any side of vegetables to order. The gentleman didn’t even try to work out if there was anything so I hung p and jumped on the Happy Vow app then went for a walk to find dinner.
Breakfast was average. If you like eating dead animal (i.e cold meats) you’d be in heaven. I did ask if they had Almond milk so I could have some cereal but the two girls I asked looked at me as if I was an alien and seemed to have a good laugh. “Almond Milk? Almonds don’t have teats “!!!!! Time for some in-house education Hotel management.
When I got back to my room the next day it was light so I could see the courtyard. Actually it was more of a wasteland and not what you’d expect a 4. 5 star hotel would have as a courtyard. Check out my picture.
I didn’t bother trying to eat in the hotel that night for obvious reasons.
When I checked out the next day I was told I had to pay city tax. I was here for business so I shouldn’t have to but I was told that now it’s too late. The last 4 trips to Cologne I have stayed at the Pullman and they always sorted this out for me with a form I would fill out.
The only good thing about this Hotel is that it’s close to the HBF but in saying that the Pullman is only a 10-15 minutes walk away.
This property should be a Mercure 3 star property. I’ll be going back to the Pullman next year as they have Almond Milk.
Very good price for a hotel of this quality, very close to railway station and better price than inferior hotels closer to the station. Rooms well appointed with coffee making facilities, could do with an iron in the room.
This hotel is very well managed, right next to Dom, Central Railway Station and a whole bunch (hundreds) of great restaurants within walking distance. Very clean, excellent hospitality. Breakfast was top class. Been there a for a week and loved it every day. Rooms are little bit on the smaller side if you are a family with small kids.
Our trip to Cologne did not start on a good note as there were some problems with my credit card and as a result, my original booking at this hotel, made through Agoda, got cancelled. To make things worse, there was a trade fair in town and the hotel reception said they were fully booked up on our last night in Köln. But they were really nice and helped to check and find us other hotel rooms in the vicinity. Definitely extra points on that.
The layout of the hotel room was a little odd. We got a twin room and one bed was right next to the window while the other bed was somewhere in the middle of the room. Instead of a big cabinet, there were 4 small cabinets, one very oddly shaped one containing the TV and the safe. There is a huge bathtub, which I was a bit worried about getting in and out of. Otherwise, it was all good. Air-condition worked well and room was well equipped, kettle, mini fridge and all.
Hotel was in a really nice location. Pretty much just behind the Cologne Hauptbahnhof and the cathedral, and 3 minutes walk to the riverside where there are many restaurants. It is steps-free from the hotel to the train station which is good if you are bringing your luggage. Lots of eateries and some shops in the train station which stays open on Sunday. It is also a short 5 minutes walk to the start of the shopping strip which takes you all the way to Neumarkt (which is about 15 mins walk).
