How to Get There
When you look at the picture on the website, you imagine what a nice place it is. In reality, the picture on the website was it. It's a small and dark spa. There were two large chairs with ottomans and one small couch. That's it guys! The 90 minute facial that I had was okay. Afterward, I was told by someone else that it was not considered the best spa in Blowing Rock. Who knew? The pool was being worked on, as well as the Jacuzzi, so those things were off limits. Not impressed for the price I paid. Will probably not return.
I guess I was thinking this place would be like the Grove Park Inn, or other similar resorts--it wasn't. For starters, they really need to upgrade their bed linens! The room was large and ok, except for a funny smell, like it had been shut up for a while. I was disappointed that the indoor poor was getting refurbished. It made a large part of the hotel smell like the inside of rubber fishing boots. The property was smaller than I envisioned, yet for the area it is one of the nicer places. I had to keep reminding myself of where I was--deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains so I could adjust expectations. Some of the staff was friendly and nice, like the concierge, but I heard others saying they couldn't wait to get out of there--and it showed in how they interacted with guests. Good location though. Very safe.
Being together with family the week after Thanksgiving is something we have strived to do for a number of years, but it had not come to fruition until this year, 2018. My husband and I along with my daughter and s-I-l, plus our grandchildren finally had the wonderful opportunity to vacation at Chetola. Despite the low 20’s temperatures and 15-20 mph winds, we braved it all and had a delightful time.
After traveling many hours, I was disappointed to arrive and be told the restaurant was booked out, the ‘pub’ which is essentially the bar was ‘first come first served’ was also packed and we were unable to reserve a spot. We were not informed of any of this when we booked and apparently a special event being held there last night was the cause. We were offered room service which took nearly and hour and was cold on arrival. The room didn’t have a room service nor wine menu, which I had to get at reception and was asked to return it, so others could look. When I asked if we could have a later dinner or what other options were there for people staying, I was told that the reception and restaurant were totally different entities and didn’t talk to one another. Dinner was average but breakfast worse. Seriously paper thin walls in the rooms, you could hear everything. Definitely more 2 stars than 3. Service by staff shocking, they simplay could not have cared. This is one to miss, I will not be back. Maybe it was just a bad weekend but never have I experienced such a difference between online reviews and my experience.
My organization recently brought a group of over 20 industry friends to Chetola for an event and I have to tell you that this place.....and their staff....is outstanding! They provided our lunch, dinner, receptions, lodging, and a trip to the Sporting Clay reserve and every element of the experience was top notch. The proprietor, Kent Tarbutton, came out and introduced himself to our membership at check-in, every manager from each department checked in throughout the event to ensure everything was going smoothly, our event coordinator Erin was there throughout the entire show - the customer service is just next-level. And, of course, the property itself is just beautiful. A very special place that I highly recommend!
