How to Get There
Overall its a good resort. The resort complex is massive. We took a segway tour around resort which we liked it a lot and it was very interesting. It shares restaurants and amenities with other two palladium resort in the complex. The rooms don't have a great view all the rooms pretty much look out to a jungle. Room was nice and spacious, no musty smell. Food - very good buffet & only 2 reservation required for a la carte restaurants. But I would recommend to do reservations anyway since the waiting time to sertain places is 30-45 minutes. But you can always go to buffet instead. After few times eating breakfast at the buffet, the chef remembered what my kids liked to have for breakfast, which was very nice. Most of the day we spent by the pool which is spacios. The beach is not the best, at lot of sea weeds and the smell is bad. But nothing you can do about it, the workers were doing their best to clean it. We enjoyed our stay and had amazing family vacation!
This year my girlfriends and I decided to go to the Palladium White Sands Resort and Spa in Maya Riviera for a week. Overall we had a wonderful time but we did have a VERY bumpy start.
We checked in on a Sunday (August 22, 2018) after 4 p.m. which is their posted check-in time. Our room was not ready... they told us to go get something to eat and or drink and come back soon. The room was still not ready at about 6 p.m. so they gave us another room. We got to the room and it looked very nice but we started noticing issues with the room pretty quickly. There was a mini-fridge in a cabinet that had a pool of water in front of it that had apparently leaked out from somewhere. We also noticed that one half of a chandelier type light fixture was flickering on and off. Moments later we lost power to half of the suite we were in. Only lasted a few minutes and then power came back on but the light fixture was still staying only half lit. There was a door that connected our unit to the unit next to us. When I opened the door, there was no lock where the door handle was — it was missing leaving our neighbors the ability to enter our room if they so desired. The safe was already closed and locked so we were not able to use that either. We just wanted to get settled and go to dinner but attempted to reach someone who could change our room first. They sent a young man to fix the issues in the room... He wiped the area in front of the fridge with the water and could not fix anything else. The water re-collected. We did not want to unpack and then have to repack to move to another room... we were told that there was NO other room available in a massive resort (on 300 acres of land) with at least 4 different sections of rooms and villas. I’m not sure if there was just a limited number of rooms allotted for us since we used a timeshare trade but it seemed impossible that there was not one other room, especially during what they refer to as their “low season”. First room available was the next evening after 6 p.m. since the room to which they would move us was being occupied by travelers that had a late checkout—4 p.m.
Day 2 we got ready and went to the beach for the day, with our luggage packed and the understanding that it would be moved to the new room when ready. Spoke with the manager, Hector, who said that he was working until 6 pm and would personally check the room before he went home. We finally got in around 6:30 and were told that Hector had gone home hours before our room was ever ready. When we were solicited on the beach to get services at the Spa during our stay, we decided to take advantage since we couldn’t go back to the room and shower for dinner until we were moved. Prior to going to the spa for a massage, I decided I wanted to go back to the old room and take a quick shower to wash off the sand, etc. I went to the old room (my key still worked) and found that our luggage was not there and the room had been cleaned and prepped for the next traveler. I went to the front desk to see if our room was ready and found that our luggage was in a storage space since the room was not ready. I told them about my situation and that I wanted to take a shower. They graciously showed me to one of two shower rooms off of the lobby that were stocked with shampoo, conditioner and body gel. This was wonderful... Unfortunately the bellman forgot to mention that I should stop by the desk to get a towel. Once in the room, I noticed that there was a sign to go to the desk to get a towel. WELL... I was already undressed and ready to get in the shower... It was quite comedic really.... I looked around and my options were a small blow-dryer and paper towels to dry off after my shower.... Needless to say, by the time I got to my massage, I was ready for it!!!!
By the time that we were done with our spa services, the new room was ready. Other than the mini fridge being essentially empty, the room was fine and we didn’t have any other problems with our room... They refilled the fridge the next day and we were good. The shower in the room was amazing...Great pressure and relaxing. The room was cleaned daily but it was difficult to tell if we got new towels and the toiletries were not replenished and were used...especially body lotion with all of the sun that we got... Otherwise, the room worked out well for us.
The resort was beautiful... There were multiple sections of the resort that were connected via walking trails and roads with pavers on which small carts ran almost continuously transporting guests around the large property to differing areas. There were also very quaint “trains” that you could take from section lobby to lobby. My friends and I chose to walk everywhere. It was a good way for us to get around and we ended up walking a good number of miles each day. I do want to point out that this was our choice as rides were easily available. There were multiple massive pools that covered continuous areas linking some of the hotel room sections (there were at least four areas- white sands, colonial, katenah, and TRS Yucatán). The pools were absolutely gorgeous. There were multiple jacuzzi areas within the large pools and drinks available almost everywhere.
This was an all inclusive resort with top shelf liquor and many options for food.
Food at all of the buffets (and there were many) was good but not spectacular. There were many “specialty” restaurants to which you were supposed to make reservations for dinners. We were also told that if you didn’t, you could wait 10-15 minutes and still get in. We did find this to be the case and the food at these restaurants was, in general, excellent. The only exceptions that we found was a “barbecue” that was had one night that was actually so bad that we left and ate somewhere else and unfortunately due to the seaside problem with seaweed (and the smell) we did not use our reservations at one of the seafood restaurants that was recommended. The buffets were great because they were convenient and much less formal yet it was nice to go to a nice sit down dinner as well.
Staff everywhere were extremely accommodating and polite. Every single person that you passed said hello and was pleasant. It made for a very nice and relaxing atmosphere. We did not elect to go on any excursions during this trip but instead enjoyed downtime at the resort and had everything we needed. There were water sports and snorkeling equipment available on the property, along with the opportunity to windsurf if so desired and daily exercise classes in the pools (alternating days with pool aerobics and water cycling). The massive issue that the complete of the carribean is experiencing with seaweed at the shore was a problem but the resort did what they could to alleviate it with tractors on the beach daily scooping it up and mulching it.
All in all, another successful girls vacation. We always enjoy ourselves on these trips and do our best to keep on laughing and make the best of any issues that we do experience. Enjoy your travels!!
The Grand Palladium White Sands resort is just an average all-inclusive resort. The food was below average with few choices The pools were good. the bar service was EXTREMELY Slow. Most bars only have one maybe two bar tenders. Being at an all inclusive you want to get your drinks in a timely fashion, yet there was continually a 15 minute wait every time we went to any bar. Especially the pool bars, and the pool bars people get hot so they need a drink!!!
We stayed for 7 Nights July 28-August 4th. There were 10 of us in our family group with five rooms in two buildings 52 & 53, which were close to the WS lobby. We enjoyed the WS pool best because of the size and there are plenty of chairs and shade and a chill atmosphere. We participated in many of the activities hosted by the pool POP Team. The RIU is still our favorite for accommodations and pool activities - they just are so good at it. We went with the idea that we were staying in a four star facility and it met our expectations. You will have to pay in cash on arrival the ecology tax which is like a $1.00 a day per room. We got everything we paid for under their control. You do not have to be up before 7:00 a.m. like many resorts to reserve a spot. We ate breakfast at 8:00 a.m. daily which was perfect for not having to wait to be seated and we were able to get our same spot with a great pool view location to the bathrooms daily. The sit down dinner restaurants and the Colonial Buffet did a better job of accommodating our group size. The only concern was the temperature which foods were served at throughout the entire complex needed to be warmer for many items. The morning and lunch buffet wait service at White Sand were just okay. There were days where we were almost finished eating before the coffee was served but they didn’t want you serving yourself. Jorge the bartender at the pool was our favorite. All the lobby bartenders are especially good, too. The top shelf liquor was abundant and well stocked. The El Dorado steak restaurant was the best overall meal. We tried a new one each night. They exceptionally accommodate food allergies and the chefs in the restaurants take it very seriously. This was impressive so tell them any food concerns. The chef will show exactly what you can/cannot eat based on the included ingredients. The desserts are beautiful works of art but miss on taste. The rooms were very clean daily. The beach is a mess to put it into one simple statement. If you are going soon expect to be disappointed with it. We totally underestimated the impact it would make since we love the beach experience. The mound of rotting vegetation to the right of the beach was awful - the wind and storms were bringing it in - way beyond manageable or controllable for a small workforce, plus they are limited by the ecological impact and regulations. The sea grass has engulfed the shore, and the water’s edge as far as you can see. This resort sits back away from the beach which ended up being blessing because of the shoreline smell. Bring bug spray because of the jungle vegetation. We wore it in the evening since all the buildings are open air facilities. The shuttles between building resorts are fast and easy to use.
We are a family of 5 just returned from a two week stay here at the White Sand resort and we can honestly say we have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our holiday. Upon arrival check-in was quick, easy and informative with Angel. We were taken to our rooms, a suite with interconnecting junior suite in villa 54. The rooms were luxurious, spacious and clean with extremely comfortable beds.
The restaurants at this resort are all superb, very easy to reserve on the day if you prefer not to wait. Particular favourites were Ribs & More and the El Dorado (Steakhouse) where we received excellent service from Jorge. All the restaurants had excellent choices and great service. We never used the buffets for dinner but for breakfast and lunch we visited La Laguna, the buffet restaurant by the pool at White Sand. A very, very special mention and huge thank you to Hannia who greeted us each day with her big smile and bubbly personality, we always looked forward to seeing her each day and missed her on her day off, she made the holiday very special.
The entertainment team at this resort are truly second to none, with a special mention to Oswaldo, Jhon and Glenn. They kept us thoroughly amused and entertained all day everyday. They work incredibly well as a team to provide activities that everyone can participate in. Keep up the great work.
