How to Get There
We stayed at the Barcelo Colonial this visit, which was August 4th thru the 9th. The last time we stayed at the Barcelo Beach in 2016. We liked the colonial much better. It was closer to all the things there is to do and the room was nicer. We stayed in the Jascilo building room 6382. For the most part it was quite. The only problem we had was not having washcloths! Every time they cleaned the room they wouldn’t leave any. One day the room wasn’t cleaned at all and we needed fresh towels, we tried calling the front desk, no answer so we had to search for a housekeeper. The resort is very clean and well maintained. The staff are very attentive at the buffets and restaurants. We tried the steakhouse this time and it did not disappoint. The buffets have just about any type of food one could ask for! I would recommend bringing your own mug or Yeti cup. It is hot there and your drinks melt quick when your lounging around the pool or the beach. Also, they have done away with straws here, so , if you like those strawberry daiquiris like I do, you might want to bring a straw or else you’ll keep a red koolaid smile! We also noticed this trip that they no longer serve coca-cola products, only Pepsi. The bowling alley, Strikers is a cool place to hang out, it’s open 24/7 with food and a bar. They staff there became like family. I would definitely recommend this resort!
This was our first time at Barcelo. The check in was painfully long, but once we checked in things were great. The rooms were nice and staff made sure we had everything we needed; from towels to stocked bar fridge. The grounds were beautiful. They were experiencing an issue with seaweed, but it wasn’t just Barcelo; I understand it was along the whole coastline. There were serious efforts at keeping the beach clear for sure. The beach was nice, but there are some rocky areas for sure and water shoes are helpful. There is a lot to do for everyone; a great water park for kids, activities like beach volleyball, tennis, pool dance parties, aquacize, and a world-class gym. The gym is top notch and staffed with great people; Ernesto and Andre were great, as was the yoga instructor. The only criticism I have is the “yoga mats;” not really for yoga. I found yoga was easier on the floor surface. The buffet was our go-to; there were many options for the health conscious. Staff were always welcoming and remembered your favourite drinks. There were so many great servers; Moises at Tropical was especially attentive. Of the a la cartes we really enjoyed Koyoto (Japanese) the most. We were surprised by the fact you had to purchase WiFi or go to designated WiFi locations at certain times of the day for free WFi. We have been to a smaller resort in the Mayan and the WiFi was free and available even on the beach. There also needs to be a better process at purchasing WIFi. Customer Service was understaffed to meet the needs of WiFi purchase and a la cartel reservations. They were apologetic and pleasant, but it is an involved, time-consuming process (40 min for WiFi)
I have stayed here once before. There are definitely areas that can be improved upon.
Resort: Beautiful grounds, great swimming pool, beaches are a bit rocky
Room: Pillows and comforter had a mildewy smell. Took several phone calls to get them changed
Customer service: Tended to be hit and miss. Some employees were very pleasant and helpful others tended to be a bit rude
Second time staying here. Overall nice resort. Pools are great. Lap pool is a plus. Beach is nice but seaweed is a problem. Like our previous experience the food is mediocre. Try to go to as many specialty restaurants as possible as they are better than the buffet. New Maya Mall doesn't really add much to the property. Be advised that teens under 18 cannot use the fitness center without a doctor's note. European visitors smoke quite a bit on the beach which is a bit annoying. Overall reasonably good value but might try elsewhere next time.
Our family spend 6 days in the resort, we had a great experience with the staff, Onesimo Mayorga in the Mariachi buffet was the best, he went above and beyond to serve us and make us feel special guests, Tomas in the front desk was very informative and helpful, Abigail in the pool area very attentive, and the rest of the servers were very pleasant and attentive. The resort has very nice pools and waterparks for kids, the beach beautiful landscaping, very well kept common areas, nice rooms, the only complaint we have is, out of the six days of our stay, we were only allowed to make 3 dining reservations and it was a mission, in about 8 stays we had in different Barcelo resorts, this is the first Barcelo that you can not have diner in their specialty restaurant every day of your stay, overall we had a good time at Barcelo Maya resort.
