Historic B&B turned contemporary hotel in Newport, RI, with an all-day cafe and impressive tech amenities
Once a Bavarian restaurant and later a B&B, the Attwater has been welcoming visitors to tony Newport since the early 1900s. After a fresh, contemporary upgrade in summer 2012, there’s nary a lace doily or brocade pillow in sight. Instead you’ll find a funky mix of graphic mod patterns, a bright palette of lime, coral, cobalt and chartreuse, and a playful Jonathan Adler–esque vibe. There are also subtle nods to the area’s nautical heritage, from rope mirrors to sea coral to sailor’s knots adorning tables.
Bed and Bath
Guestrooms are equipped with a full suite of tech amenities, including iPod docking stations, Apple TV, free WiFi and sleek gas fireplaces (in suites). Most have sliding wood doors that reveal white tiled bathrooms with a separate shower area. Waffled kimonos hang in the closets, and oversize beds with designer linens ensure a soothing night’s sleep.
For relaxation outside the room, there’s a patio and downstairs lounge. The small café serves a tasty small plates breakfast such as caramelized onion and walnut bread with bacon jam. It’s easy to linger over the free gourmet breakfast of scones, biscuits and muffins, but the hotel's real perk is its central location close to all of Newport's attractions.
