Behind an anonymous glass façade similar to that of many a Midtown hotel, TRYP’s cleverly organized lobby makes a good first impression. Under high barrel ceilings, one side of the space is all business (check-in desks manned by a cheery staff, hidden computer stations, a private meeting room and a 24-hour gym), while the other side of the lobby is set up for play. You can host a business meeting at the long communal table, grab a coffee from the drink station or dine on tasty tapas at Gastro Bar at 35th Street. Anchoring the space is a marble-topped bar lit by dozens of low-hanging bulbs, and a curved leather sofa designed to echo the colorful mosaics of Barcelona’s Park Güell.
Bed & Bath
The 173 guestrooms stand out for their impressive square footage, long-stay amenities (such as tea- and coffeemakers) and separate living rooms with sofabeds (in Premium Rooms), but there’s little of the lobby’s thoughtful design flair. All have blond wood furnishings, flocked wallpaper, flat-screen TVs and headboards adorned with classic New York quotes. The simple bathrooms are done up in red and gray tiles and have walk-in rainfall showers with toiletries in pump dispensers, plus marble vanities and hair dryers.
Back on the first floor, Gastro Bar at 35th Street gives a nod to TRYP’s Spanish roots with a red-on-gold palette and tasty (if pricey) tapas menu. Think charcuterie and cheese platters, manchego croquetas and veggie flatbread, plus international favorites such as fish tacos, mac and cheese and hot wings. A Mediterranean breakfast buffet is served each morning, as well as an afternoon wine and cheese hour that changes daily. For the business crowd, there’s a small 24-hour fitness center (accessed with your key card) and a private meeting space behind a sliding barn door.
In the Area
A short hop south of Times Square, this Style Steal is great for tourists and business travelers looking for a close-to-it-all stay. Get a culture fix at the Museum of Modern Art, a must-visit Midtown museum housing the world’s best collection of modern masterpieces, or thumb your way through an original Gutenberg Bible and Mozart’s own copy of his Symphony in D Major at the Morgan Library and Museum. First-timers shouldn’t miss the Empire State Building, a stroll through Grand Central Terminal or a quick photo op at your neon-lit neighbor, Times Square.
How to Get There
I stayed at the Tryp by Wyndham for a business trip. Great location, close to Time Sqare. Rooms are very clean and of a decent size for New York.
For the price, this is a very good hotel and I would gladly stay there in the future. I recommend. However, there should be an area where we can work. This is a must for business people. There is a library, but it's used as a bagage check during the day!
The hotel is in a very good location - near Empire state building and Times square. We visited New York with my boyfriend and stayed for 2 days, the room was very beautiful, well designed and comfortable, the bed was very big and also there was a coffee machine.Negatives: We were woken up by the maids at 4:00 in the morning (very noisy) and the service at reception could be friendlier.
There were a number of small issues that would make me reluctant to return. Given that this was a business trip and I just needed a place to sleep, it passed. But even on a business trip I'd like to feel like the management was making a thoughtful effort to provide some creature comforts. Okay, the bed WAS comfortable. But no reading lights on either side of the bed, a leaky toilet (not fixed after I reported it), a small (empty) refridgerator on the floor at the foot of the bed, thin walls and loud neighbors, and a seriously understaffed/overworked bar/restaurant. The lobby is small, and at one point there was a very big stack of laundry baskets parked in the middle of it. Not cool. I will give them a good score for having multiple elevators that responded quickly.
We visited Newyork with my in-laws and 2 year old kid. Booked a room in TRYP with two queen beds and stayed for 3 days The location is very good. We could reach the times square in around 12 minutes and typically any shop nearby in 5 minutes. The hotel staff were very friendly and even offered free milk for my kid when we requested at night.
One con we could observe was that the road in which the hotel is located is very busy. There is a police station next to it and lots of police cars around. Getting out in a taxi or Uber from the hotel gets difficult at times.
Overall it is a good stay for a decent price.
The rooms were small but well designed, very big and comfy bed. The toiletries were an unexpected surprise, loved the brand, hadn't seen it before. I don't know what happened during our arrival, they didn't seem to be expecting us and it was late and we were tired, but they worked quickly to get us into our rooms. The concierge helped us find tickets for a Broadway show and the fries and burger from the hotel restaurant were a very good surprise: delicious. The gym was a bit disappointing but they have the basic necessary equipment. Overall very happy with the location and overall feel of the hotel. Only 12 min walking distance from Broadway and 25min walking distance from Chelsea. Would definitely come back again.
