Overview

Original New York Morgans Midtown outpost with a cosmopolitan look near must-see landmarks

The Look

Cosmopolitan. The boutique hotel has a prevalent checkerboard pattern that is an edgy offset to a muted gray-on-white palette in the Andrée Putman–designed quarters. Curvaceous rounded-back chairs, microsuede loungers, original black-and-white photography and a splash of greenery here and there add warmth.

Bed & Bath

Although most guestrooms have interior-facing views and start at a petite 220 square feet, there are plush beds with playful quote cards and high-tech mod cons like flat-screen TVs and iPod docking systems that reach party-amping volumes. The small bathrooms have rainfall shower-tub combos, but the checkerboard and lipstick-red toiletry holders stocked with Malin + Goetz goodies give them a rock ‘n’ roll chic.

Beyond

A massive brass chandelier lights the shimmering Reserve, a throwback bar and lounge that opened in 2014. Open all day, you can start your day with the free Continental breakfast and finish it tasting through their extensive menu of bourbons and scotches. Want to pump some iron? There’s a 24-hour fitness center on the fourth floor with state-of-the-art exercise equipment.

In the Area

Hip gastropubs, myriad ethnic eats and a post-college crowd are propagating Murray Hill, the neighborhood that occupies most of the 30s between Madison Avenue and the East River. Between 37th and 38th streets, Morgans is minutes to such New York landmarks as the Empire State Building, Grand Central and the New York Public Library. Gorge on a double cheeseburger and malted milkshake at Madison Square Park’s Shake Shack. Try cask ales at the rooftop brewery of Mario Batali’s Eataly, or join the dapper set for a crisp dubbel and an artisanal meat-and-cheese spread at The Cannibal. For dinner, savor Middle Eastern specialties at Arabesque, and save room for the chocolate mousse and a vintage vin at the sister French restaurant, Barbés, down the street.
