How to Get There
My husband and I recently stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. Contrary to many of the reviews, we were more than pleased with our stay.
The hotel has a very good location, near transportation and several attractions. The front desk and bellmen were friendly and polite. The check-in process was seamless and though we'd bid on a queen room on Priceline, the wonderful staff member at the front desk provided us with a king room. The lobby was well done, clean, and nicely decorated. The very nice king room was a good size, clean, and well furnished. The a/c in the room made it quite a cool retreat for breaks during several hot days. The floor we stayed on was quiet and we found the bed comfortable. The bathroom was spacious and spotlessly clean.
There are several very good restaurants, coffee shops, and other amenities nearby (including a CVS and a Walgreens/Duane Reade). Likewise, the hotel is close to transportation including Grand Central Terminal.
Our only negatives were that the lobby was rather warm (the weather was in the 90s most days), the safe was locked when we wished to store our valuables and we were unable to use it, we were only provided one washcloth daily which seemed odd, and the TV set intermittently lost its signal (sometimes for long periods as we were winding down after a day out and about).
Overall this was a very good stay and I would recommend this hotel to others.
I was a bit surprised to see the reviews here were negative, I had a good nights stay at this place. The staff were helpful and nice, rooms were decent and the AC was the best one we experienced in NYC. All in all I can definitely recommend it.
Nice looking older building but it's like it's been forgotten about its shabby had a few problems safe not working was fixed very noisy aircon was fixed dirty bathroom when we arrived into room was cleaned tried to charge us again on arrival and 200 dollars more than booked for. Pity could be beautiful boutique style hotel with some t l c
Having booked this 7 night stay as a Hilton hotel, we were slightly concerned when it changed hands to a Westgate. Reading the recent reviews piled on the worries, but once we had arrived they were gone. The hotel is slightly dated, but kept clean and in order. Our room was cleaned to a high standard daily, with fresh towels and coffee refill to boot. The only slight downside was the reception staff, think they could do with a personality transplant. The bell boys out front were very friendly, helpful and courteous; Mike in particular was the best, with a good knowledge of New York Hardcore music 👍🏻. Would definitely stay again.
I'm rating both recent stay and potential of this statuesque property near the UN in Midtown East. Loved our Queen Balcony room in this 30's property. The room was a good size by Manhattan standards. Appointments are nice, if dated. I know that remodel is planned. Nice size bathroom with bidet. Shower took a bit to learn but hand held shower head is nice (in addition to regular head). Though we didn't use the jacuzzi tub, it was a good option to have. Comfy bed, could use assortment of pillow firmnesses. Window shades/curtains require some repair, especially the step up entrance (exit?) to the balcony. Access to the balcony needs a step as it's a good 18" or more. Now - the balcony.....the balcony is exquisite. Of the 300 rooms, only 13 have a balcony - really more of a patio. Ours was at least 8x10 with a wrought iron table and chairs, a view (narrow) of the East River. New owners have been here only a month and there are service issues to be worked out. That said, front desk staff listened and made notes - including considerations for our next visit. A '3' rating for now, but promises to become a top tier option when visiting NY.
