How to Get There
The staff spent a lot of time talking to each other. They were uninformative and impatient on the phone leading up to the trip. I hate it when you wait for the desk personnel to stop talking to each other and then when they do, just look at you. No coffee or refrigerator in the room. But the suite that we had was great. Front of the building with a view of the park and interior window. French doors, old style small bathroom but great location. Forget the staff. Stay for the location and the room. The housekeeping staff was great, though.
I've stayed here about 5 times since 2000, but no more. Despite being a repeat visitor, the check-in staff was unfriendly, unhelpful--no concept of loyalty. The rooms are larger than most NYC, but no longer cost-effective: it's a mid-range hotel charging luxury prices.I've switched to hotels where I earn reward points & am treated better.
I love to find the one of a kind places that is not part of a large franchise to say when I travel. This is an older hotel with a great vibe and feel to it with an incredible location with bus and subway access right by central park and the Museum of Natural Science.
The word “excelsior” is most often used to indicate superior quality and after spending almost two weeks at the extraordinary Excelsior Hotel at 81st Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, not only does this hotel live up to its dictionary meaning, it by far surpasses it! As my story goes…I decided to lodge at the Excelsior hotel because I had just come from staying at another hotel on the Upper West Side and I wanted to continue lodging in this vicinity. After staying at the Excelsior for just a day, I was so extremely satisfied with this hotel that I decided to extend my stay for at least another week or two! The Excelsior is truly a lovely vintage hotel in an ideal location whereby a walk to Central Park or to the Museum of Natural History can easily be less than a NYC minute. The Hotel itself was built in the 1930’s and is so beautifully well preserved that even its vintage marble and cherry wood lobby interiors look as beautiful today as it must have when this hotel first opened. The hotel offers an array of various types of hotel rooms and the one that was assigned to me was so perfect!!! Overall, all of the Excelsior hotel rooms offer charm, elegance, space and most important, affordability. The entire front desk staff are so terrifically professional, friendly hard working employees who perform at their very best everyday, around the clock in order to accommodate all hotel visitors. Special mention to Scott and Nicole and to Brad, who has to be one of the best bell captains I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I love this hotel!! Jeff M. 🕶
This hotel is upper west side so we had to use the subway to get to the main attractions. This did not phase us & there was a subway station at the top of the avenue. Location great for Central Park & National History Museum.
The hotel itself was very traditional & quaint.
The staff were very friendly from reception, porters & cleaners. The rooms were lovely & bathroom adequate with lots of towels changed everyday.
The only thing lacking for anyone from the UK is that there are no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. We really missed not having a kettle or fridge. Not been able to make a hot drink after doing hours of walking & tourists things around Manhattan was dissspointing at the end of the day.
Also, check for extra costs that can be added onto your bill without knowing until check out.
