The Nu Hotel feels just like Brooklyn: young, quirky and modern. Geometric booths lit by a sculptural neon chandelier face picture windows framing views of the funky neighborhood types walking by. Throw in some recycled wood here, some vintage letters there, and you’ve got an ideal home base for exploring both this borough and the other one, which sits a short cab or subway ride across the river.
Bed & Bath
The 93 streamlined rooms make 335 square feet feel more like 500, thanks to lots of natural light, bright white walls and large windows. Custom-designed hammocks add a playful vibe without compromising space in the suites. The artsy sensibility is underlined by rotating murals created by local artists, and chalkboards in the bathrooms for writing to-do’s or for channeling your inner Picasso. Best of all, you can feel good about your stay thanks to such eco-friendly features as organic linens, lead-free paint and cork flooring.
The Nu Hotel has the kind of amenities you’d expect to find at a much pricier hotel (like the state-of-the-art, 24/7 fitness center complete with machines, free weights, boxing equipment, yoga mats and more). They even offer cute bikes free of charge so you can combine fitness and sightseeing. The hotel’s Misdemeanor sidewalk café and bar serves local brews, expertly mixed cocktails and fun tapas.
In the Area
Located at the intersection of four Brooklyn neighborhoods — Downtown, Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens — and a 20-minute subway ride away from Manhattan, the hotel is ideally located for exploring both boroughs. Want to stay local? Join the neighborhood crew curing their hangovers with breakfast sandwiches at the vintage cool Building on Bond, then shop the vintage stores and boutiques lining Atlantic Avenue (we love Hollander & Lexer). Borrow a free bike to explore the waterfront promenade, the antique carousel and cutting-edge 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park, with its postcard views of Manhattan. Then reward yourself with some speakeasy-style cocktails at the Clover Club before haute Southern fare at Char No. 4.
How to Get There
I opted to not stay in NYC this visit and found NU Hotel to be a wonderful alternative. Great location, excellent subway access, too. NU has large rooms, very nice amenities and an outstanding staff. They allowed early check-in and provided restaurant options in the neighborhood, should you need them.
This is the first time we stayed here and it was a pleasant experience. It is different with funky art on the walls and a tall chalk board and chalk in the bathroom. There is a small but cozy area in the lobby that double as a place to wait, read or have breakfast to order a drink in the afternoon, evening, We had an ADA compliant room as I am in a wheelchair. This hotel is the first hotel I have ever stayed in that got the bed height correct 18-20 inches off the floor!!! the zero step shower was perfect. The hotel is located near transit, restaurants. cafes etc.
This was our second stay at this charming small hotel. Customer service was consistently excellent, room was quiet and bed very comfortable. Buffet breakfast was European style with ample selection. The room did tend to run warm, but easily cooled down with either just the fan or the air conditioning set on low. There are lovely restaurants and shops nearby. The walking around Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens is delightful. Do not miss walking across the Brooklyn bridge to Manhattan, the views are incredible.
Stayed in Brooklyn for a change and couldn’t have picked a more convenient and pleasant hotel. Great location for transport and walk to piers. Tons of restaurants and shops.
Had a suite which was well decorated, roomy, and very clean. Can’t get that for this price in Manhattan, especially with a parking deal attached.
All Staff were consistently courteous, smiling, and friendly. The included breakfast was more than I expected and had something for everyone.
Will definitely stay again!
The hotel is located in downtown Brooklyn, which is the perfect location for exploring other parts of Brooklyn by foot. Easy access with the subway to Greenpoint and Manhattan. The bus to Red Hook and Bushwick is right outside the hotel. The hotel is modern and cool, the rooms are spacious and very clean. Very nice bathrooms with bathrobes. There is a coffeemaker and minibar. We like to stay in a room facing the Atlantic avenue and the traffic is not bad at all. The staff are all very polite, helpful and nice. The breakfast is more than adequate. We love this hotel and are so happy that we found it, we have stayed here three times over the past six years and are very pleased with our stays.
