Buzzy Beaux Arts building hotel with sleek modern furniture, a beautifully designed bar, and a fabulous location in Union Square
Smack in the middle of uptown and downtown, this W has one of the best locations in the city: it’s handy to get almost anywhere from Union Square, a historic intersection in central Manhattan, but the neighborhood has so much to offer in terms of food and shopping, you might not even need to leave. A mix of original details from the 1911 building, like the grand staircase and oversized windows, work perfectly against the trademark W details of modern furniture jazzed up by the occasional pop of bright orange or glittery gold. Rooms also follow suit, with the W’s signature pillowtop mattresses and headboards made from stylized maps of Union Square—a fun touch. Unusual for a hotel bar, the Living Room draws a healthy lot of locals: the Midtown crowd loves to stop by after work to lounge on the cushy couches and throw back cocktails made with freshly squeezed juices.
In the Area
There’s tons of drool-worthy food options within minutes of the hotel: this neighborhood has some of the best spots in the city. Try the Union Square Greenmarket, a gourmet marketplace open four days a week and home to some of New York’s most exciting, locally produced treats—stop by and pick up some cider, cheese, and bread for a picnic in Union Square itself, which has grassy areas and plenty of cafés for finding a post-lunch espresso. Half a mile from the hotel are two outposts of the Momofuku empire: stop for modern Korean at Ssam Bar, followed by a sweet treat from the Milk Bar bakery. The downtown location of the W also means quick access to the nightlife of the East Village, and eight different subway lines are within a three-minute walk, so all of Manhattan is at your fingertips.
