Rising from the corner of East 23rd and Madison Square, the slender Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower has been a Big Apple beacon since 1909. Back then it was the tallest building in the world, modeled after Venice’s Campanile down to a clock tower with four faces, one on each side of the tower’s 25th to 27th floors. In May 2015, Hotelier Ian Schrager and partner Marriott put the building back on the map renovating it from spire to clock to parkside entrance. The result? A hotel that stitches the clubby warmth of Manhattan’s Gilded Age mansions with Schrager’s signature minimalism for a classy residential vibe. Guests are welcomed into an oak-paneled foyer with a 30-foot long, hand-foraged black steel fireplace, and a stunning Venetian plaster staircase spirals up to the second floor billiards parlor and sophisticated library cocktail lounge. The hotel’s neutral palette of taupe, ivory and white is complemented by just enough dark wood and amber lighting to anchor big, modern rooms to the tower’s gilded grandeur of yore. Marble bathrooms go beyond with enclosed rainforest showers, and Le Labo toiletries; upgrade to suites for a soaking tub. Picture windows frame unique city views including leafy Madison Square, the colorful Empire State Building, and the ritzy One Madison residential tower (where big shots like Rupert Murdoch and Tom Brady own homes). We’re big fans of British chef Jason Atherton’s The Clocktower, the second–floor dining room peering out over the park. The menu is inspired by his homeland with dishes such as Scottish langoustine with mango and a 36-hour Berkshire pork belly.
