Millennial-friendly hotel with industrial-chic design, fast WiFi, and plenty of space for a casual work or coffee rendezvous
The first New York location from Dallas-based NYLO, this hotel is part of a chain but it has an appealing, boutique feel. The public areas blend into one another, the old-fashioned library and the 1920s-style LOCL bar sharing space with the piano lounge (where occasional jazz sessions make use of the bright red grand piano). The rooms have greyscale wood floors and a Scandi-chic look that’s heavy on the blond wood and minimalist design, although the beds, which rest on giant wooden wheels, are a playful touch. A branch of West Village hotspot Red Farm is on the ground floor, with an enticing bistro-style menu of modern Chinese fusion items like pastrami-stuffed eggrolls and bacon-and-egg fried rice. While the style draws a youthful clientele, the hotel is close to so many kid-friendly sights that it makes a good place for families to stay.
In the Area
On the Upper West Side, three blocks from food emporium Zabar’s and two from Central Park, the location of NYLO practically demands that you go on a picnic. (Fairway and Citarella, two other gourmet food havens, are also nearby). Museums are handily close: a five minute's walk will get you to the massive American Museum of Natural History, with its iconic 94-foot-long model of a blue whale, as well as the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, featuring five floors of interactive exhibits that’s a must-visit for families. A couple of blocks to the west is Riverside Drive, perfect for afternoon strolls by the 79th Street Boat Basin marina. The neighborhood has a quiet, residential feel in the evenings, but your ticket to the action—the 79th St. subway stop–is just two blocks away.
