Romantic Upper East Side pied-à-terre with European-inspired design and a wine-centric happy hour
European charm meets Upper East Side elegance at this historic 1929 hotel. Original features like the 1920s Otis elevator are polished to perfection, and throwback touches, including mosaics of 20th-century New York by artist Stephanie Jaffe Werner, are a tribute to the building’s past. An intimate pied-à-terre design sets the tone in both the lobby’s reading nook — stocked with vintage books and an old-fashioned telephone — and the living room, which has airy floor-to-ceiling windows, metallic accents and a chess board decorating the coffee table.
Bed and Bath
The 50 cozy guestrooms are done up in a muted palette of seafoam and beige. Although the rooms are small (starting at 180 square feet), luxury details make up for the lack of space: Chandeliers dangle from the ceilings, Egyptian cotton linens hug the pillowtop beds, and original works by fashion photographer Deborah Turbeville adorn the walls. The bathrooms spoil with Beekman 1802 products and fluffy Frette robes.
Nestled in a tree-lined street in the Upper East Side, this boutique hotel has all the trappings of a romantic B&B. A fresh spread of croissants, jams and cappuccinos greets guests in the morning, and a daily wine and cheese reception toasts the evening. But the best perk is the friendly staff, which goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home (if you miss happy hour, they’ll bring a glass of wine up to your room). Salud.
Flights are available to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from major U.S. cities on a variety of carriers. The hotel does not offer transfers to/from LGA, about 10 miles away, or JFK, about 15 miles away. Taxis to/from LGA and JFK are available for approximately $35 and $55, respectively, each way. If you’re renting a car for the transfer, self-parking is available for an additional $39 per day.
