Historic 761-room landmark with a cocktail lounge across from Midtown’s Carnegie Hall
Park Central’s Deco-inspired design hearkens back to the hotel’s 1920s roots, when it accommodated stars like Mae West and Eleanor Roosevelt. Today, New York-based design firm Jeffrey Beers International is responsible for the look of the 761-room hotel. The elegant lobby has a muted natural color scheme, with chrome light fixtures, angular slatted wood, and a gleaming marble front desk. Guest rooms are undeniably sleek, with glossy, low-lying furniture, including a desk that doubles as a TV stand. Bedside tables make space for iPod docking stations and chrome lamps ringed with easy-to-access outlets. Bathrooms are equipped with Kohler fixtures and rain showers filled with large bottles of C.O. Bigelow amenities. Some rooms offer city views and all are decorated by graphic cityscapes and NYC-related stock art. The swanky Park Lounge is a cozy place for pre-dinner cocktails, while the grab-and-go Central Market has snacks and beverages (including wine and beer) for sale, plus a strong morning spread of Nespresso drinks and pastries from local favorite Amy’s Bread. The third-floor gym is open 24/7 and has a small selection of cardio machines and free weights.
In the Area
Located on Seventh Avenue between 56th and 55th streets, Park Central, as the name suggests, is just three blocks south of Central Park. Spend a day exploring the city’s largest expanse of urban greenery, then meander east to Madison or Fifth Avenue for some of the city’s best big names in shopping, from Céline to Swarovski. Head over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a hearty dose of culture, where you’ll find over two million works of art worth perusing. When hunger strikes, hit up Burger Joint, the iconic cash-only dive in the basement of Le Parker Meridien slinging some of the city’s best burgers. Grab drinks over at the new Viceroy, whose craft cocktails can be enjoyed in Kingside, the hotel’s Deco, ground-floor operation, or upstairs in the clubby rooftop bar, The Roof.
