Wallet-friendly Times Square stay with modern Euro style and a buzzing rooftop bar
If a Virgin flight morphed into a hotel, it’d look exactly like the 22-story citizenM Hotel Times Square. With customizable mood lighting and a bold color palette of red, black and white, CitizenM’s first American outpost is hip and modern through and through. The airy, living room-like lobby sets the high design tone of the space: expect low slung sofas, graphic artwork, glossy mounted fixie bikes and bright plastic taxidermy. Everything about the lobby feels clean and current, from the ample outlets to the digitized self-check-in (including on-screen prompts to purchase breakfast or a late check-out). Upstairs, 230 rooms are compact (the Deluxe Room is just 161 square feet) but cleverly designed: underbed drawers plus a pod-like shower are welcome space-saving details, while modcons go above and beyond. In addition to flatscreen TVs and free WiFi, every room also comes with a tablet storing DJ-curated playlists and customizable light settings, as well as cheeky wall art (a print of the words “picture a can of tomato soup here”) and oversized windows equipped with remote-control blackout screens. We especially love the 24-hour multi-purpose lobby bistro CanteenM: in the morning, there’s a groaning breakfast buffet spread and an adjacent espresso bar; by evening, there’s a spread of à la carte snacks (including a self-serve cheese, almond and olive bar), grab-n-go wine bottles and specialty cocktails at the bar. There’s also a wraparound rooftop terrace on the hotel’s 21st floor, plus a basketball court-inspired gym with a small outdoor space for yoga.
In the Area
It wouldn’t be a trip to Times Square without making time for a Broadway show. Score same-day discount tickets a few blocks away at the TKTS booth in Times Square. Afterwards, catch a casual izakaya meal alongside in-the-know locals at the subterranean Sake Bag Hagi. Revel in the Old New York glamour of Grand Central Terminal over martinis at the speakeasy-style Campbell Apartment bar or dinner at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. Bryant Park, a short walk from the hotel, offers some welcome green space in the middle of Midtown. Depending on the time of year, you can ice-skate, catch an alfresco flick or challenge a local to chess or petanque.
