Old World luxury and white glove service delight at one of New York’s most fabled hotels.
At the southeast corner of Central Park, the Plaza Hotel epitomizes refined luxury. With its noble French chateau façade, glossy marble floors, twinkling crystal chandeliers and Louis XVI–style furniture, a stay here is anything but ordinary. The hotel’s extensive renovation wrapped up in 2008 and brought the interiors into the 21st century, but the legendary 21-story building still retains the grandeur and charm that has been wowing guests since its opening in 1907.
Bed & Bath
This grande dame’s 282 guestrooms are elegant and commodious, starting at 475 square feet and featuring Beaux-Arts-inspired decor, wainscoted walls and crystal chandeliers. Kingsize beds are bedecked in plush Italian linens and down comforters and backed by off-white leather headboards. Although the hotel’s overall aesthetic harks back to the past, creature comforts such as iPads, iPod docking stations and 42-inch flat-screen televisions can be found in each room. The spa-like bathrooms are done floor to ceiling with pearl-white and honey-mustard mosaic tile, and guests are pampered with gold-plated Sherle Wagner faucets, marble vanities and Caudalie toiletries.
The dimly lit Rose Club overlooks the marble-clad lobby and swank Champagne Bar, and it offers live jazz on Wednesday evening (best enjoyed with a Bloody Mary and a bite from the Epicurean menu). But the crown jewel of this hotel is the Palm Court (which served as a setting for scenes in The Great Gatsby), with its ornate stained glass ceiling and stately columns framing the room; be sure to stop here for afternoon tea, and try the New Yorker or Eloise varieties. Other services include a world class Caudalie Spa, Warren Tricomi Salon, 12 retail outlets and a food hall with such delish destinations as Luke’s Lobster, Lady M Cake Boutique and Sushi of Gari.
