Sophisticated East Village hideaway a stone's throw from the area's hip restaurants and speakeasy-style bars
Formerly a dodgy part of the city, the Bowery has cleaned up nicely and this faux-warehouse building is home to some of the most stylish rooms in town. For all the dimly lit sophistication of the lobby (the bar in particular is a local haunt), the rooms have lots of natural light coming through big windows and while they're not enormous, they feel spick and span thanks to polished wooden floors and oversized mirrors. Views of the East Village and, from some rooms, the Empire State Building, are worth asking for a room on an upper floor. Gemma, the Italian restaurant, does excellent, full-bodied meals from breakfast to dinner, including hearty pizzas with spicy soppressatta. Save room for the dessert calzone, though, which comes stuffed with ricotta and Nutella.
In the Area
No need to go far for cool Lower East Side bars, restaurants and buzzy nightlife—the Bowery has a prime spot near fantastic food and drink options. Stroll 12 minutes north to David Chang's Momofuku Noodle Bar for pork belly ramen or—why not?—a caviar and fried chicken dinner. The much-beloved Prune is just a few blocks from the hotel; try to get in here for weekend brunch if you can and don't forget a Bloody Mary (they're famous for their variations). If you want to get in on the Italian bitters trend, saunter over to Amor y Amargo, a cozy bar with super-creative cocktails flavored with toffee and clove, stone fruit and black pepper, and chili and cocoa. Art lovers should make time for a few hours at the nearby New Museum, an excellent contemporary art museum with a scintillating series of exhibitions.
