A Big Apple classic with timeless charm and a prime location near all the top Midtown sights
Almost a century old, the Warwick has some serious New York cred: it was built by William Randolph Hearst (name-checked by the hotel bar) and has hosted nearly all the big names of the 20th century, including Elvis and The Beatles. It retained its old-school elegance with timeless rooms while New York developed around it, managing to function as a luxurious retreat from the chain coffee shops and Subway sandwich joints that seem to appear on every block. Time slows down when you enter, and the visitors ensconced in leather armchairs at the bar seem happy to be taking a break from zipping around the city that you worry they might never leave. You won’t find bachelor parties staying here or 24-hour party people, but that’s part of its old-fashioned charm.
In the Area
This Midtown hotel is surrounded by some of the top cultural attractions and restaurants in New York, all within a few minutes walk. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral are all within spitting distance, but if you’ve already checked them off your list then get right to exploring the fabulous New York restaurants nearby; try Aquavit for minimalist Scandinavian food that’s won two Michelin stars, or hit up Nobu 57 for slick Japanese-Peruvian food; then have a cocktail at Monkey Bar, a swanky and romantic bar that draws a chic crowd who love the dim lights and “old Manhattan” ambience. The next day you can burn off those calories with run or stroll around Central Park, just five blocks from the hotel. There are two subway stops within two blocks, for easy access to the rest of the city.
