How to Get There
Notwithstanding a couple of minor hiccups, this hotel deserves every bit of the 5-star rating. We booked a room with a view of the Harbour Bridge and the Rocks, but would definitely go for an Opera House view should we return to Sydney.
Overall, we couldn't say enough good things about the staff. From the valet attendants who readily acknowledge the guests as they step out of the hotel or walk back in after a long day, the front desk employees, the breakfast staff at Silvester's, to the room service staff. Also, I'm very particular about housekeeping and was extremely satisfied at the condition of our room upon our return each day. The room was small to average-sized and I find the bathroom a bit cramped. There was a bank of 5 or 6 elevators which, even on busy weekday mornings, was able to manage elevator traffic efficiently.
The breakfast buffet has a good variety of hot dishes, pastries, fruits, etc. As mentioned in the title the hotel is walking distance to all three and a quick Uber ride to our other destinations. A block away is Gateway, a building facing the Sydney Harbour with a number of dining choices (Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, etc).
The service at the hotel's Three Bottle Man Bar was excruciatingly slow when we grabbed lunch there one day, and our brief conversation with the server at the table next to ours (who we asked about our food as we couldn't find our server) left a lot to be desired. The concierge on duty on the morning we inquired at their desk could also use a little more training, I suppose. After our unsuccessful attempt at finding last minute tickets online to a play at the Opera House we approached the concierge for help (which is what most people used to do first). He did the exact same thing we did, went online at the Opera House's tickets availability page, which of course yielded the same result. When we asked him if it was worth going to the box office in person to check for tickets availability he discouraged us saying whatever is online would be the same as what they have at the box office. We decided to go anyway, and boy, we're glad we did because they apparently release/open up same-day seats, at least for the play we wanted. We ended up buying 3 tickets for the performance on that same night. The seats were 5 rows from the front, level with the stage, and right in the middle. I mentioned this particular concierge experience not to complain but again, for training purposes.
Since our stay I have recommended this hotel to friends and family who are planning a trip to Sydney. Definitely a place going back to over and over.
I visited the Sydney Harbour Marriott August 31 - September 3rd. The staff was extremely professional and helpful from the moment that my Sister and I arrived. They offered tips to local places that we should visit and they offered us an opera house view at a very reasonable rate, the rooms were modern with excellent appointments including robes and slippers and the view of the opera house was fantastic. The buffet in the hotel is excellent as well and I highly recommend that you try it at least one day of your stay. I especially enjoyed the location of the hotel and the close proximity to Circular Quay, the opera house and lots of delicious restaurants. The next time that you're in Sydney don't hesitate to give the Sydney Harbour Marriott a try!!
I was in Sydney for a night to see some theatre and chose the Marriott as it was in Circular Quay close to the the Opera House and Ferry terminals (I took a trip out to Manly) and offered a good $299 a night rate.
I was allowed to check in early at around 10.30 (usually it’s 2pm) and was allocated a harbour facing room on the 9th floor. It was fairly low but you could just see the Harbour Bridge to the right.
The room was average but adequate size though the shower was too pokey. The room was well appointed with everything you need for a short stay. Check in and out was efficient. Wifi worked well and bottled water was complimentary. But it’s all about the location and the 5 minute walk from Circular Quay station worked well for me.
