Reading through the reviews, it really shows how different, individual experiences impact the lasting impression of a stay at Halycon House.

We wanted to love it, especially at the price point & with a great interest in Anna Spiro design. Unfortunately we had one of those stays where so many things went astray - missing & incorrect restaurant bookings, room location within the complex - noisy from the restaurant & dark, & the dynamics of other guest staying at the time.

The overall impression for us was a disappointing waste of money, which I guess is the risk at the prices charged - expectations can be hard to meet if things go wrong & are not addressed. It is pretty & a lovely setting but we didn’t have the opportunity to relax & enjoy our stay. We can see though, how it could be a fabulous experience for others & why it gets many great reviews.

Our review may have been totally different if we had been in a higher level, albeit significantly more expensive, room or if the staff had been more attuned to the impact of guest dynamics & placement throughout the restaurant & accommodation.

It’s a small venue & getting a balance for everyone to enjoy their stay is resoundingly the difference between a great impression or the underwhelming experience we had.

Beyond Expectations

Halcyon House had been up there on our to do list for a few years. We were so impressed with our first two day stay, that we returned for another couple of days on our way back to Sydney.

Both design enthusiasts, we were extremely impressed with the elegant yet eclectic interiors that made this converted beach motel a luxury retreat. During our first stay we were in a superior room on the second floor, and for our returning stay we booked an ocean deluxe room located on level three. We would highly recommend both room categories, it was definitely worth booking the room categories on higher rooms with views of the pool and ocean glimpses.

Everything about this seaside gem exceeded expectations. The rooms were stunning. The beachfront location on such a spectacular stretch of coastline was superb. The staff and service was exceptional, nothing was too much trouble and all the staff were so friendly and accommodating. The included breakfast was absolutely delicious and you could pretty much order anything you wanted. Paper Daisy, the fine dining restaurant on site, produced absolutely delicious food and the decor was divine. The pool and amenities were also great, we did complimentary yoga on Saturday morning then had some chairs and an umbrella set up for us on the beach.

We only had one issue during our first stay and this was quickly rectified by the lovely reception staff. We purchased the Pamper Package which included a two course lunch at Paper Daisy and two spa treatments. When booking, I asked whether the spa treatments should be booked in advance and the lady I spoke with on the phone said I could do this, however as our stay was mid week it should be fine to book once we were there as it was included in our package and space would be saved for us regardless. When we arrived we were disappointed to find that the spa was fully booked for the duration of our stay and they were only able to fit one of us in for the massage. The spa looked fantastic and we were disappointed that we didn't get to experience this part of our stay that we thought was secured when we booked. The lady at reception was extremely apologetic and understanding, and offered us a four course dinner with matching wines at Paper Daisy to make up for it. This was a lovely gesture and was very much appreciated.

I find it hard to describe what made this hotel so special, but to be honest I think it was the location of such a spectacular full service boutique hotel in a quaint Australian beach town. The experience was beyond relaxing and the staff and service made it feel like our home away from home. We honestly cannot speak more highly of Halcyon House and cannot wait to return. Fingers crossed our waitlist spot comes up for NYE, loved this place!

Heaven on earth!

We had the most amazing three nights away without our kids, staying at the gorgeous Halcyon House on one of their package weekends. From the moment we arrived, we were totally impressed by the friendly and professional staff (Laura was an excellent host), as well as the gorgeous interiors and surrounds. We stayed in a Classic room on the ground floor and it was divine - beautifully furnished. The restaurant Paper Daisy is wonderful with exquisite dishes and superb wines (big ups to sommelier Tim). We couldn’t get enough of it! The Spa is also fabulous. The attention to detail at Halcyon House is second to none - the pool, the yoga class, the bikes on offer, the beach picnic! We loved it all! It is top end but worth every penny. We’re already dreaming about our next “Halcyon days”....

We arrived with great expectations for our three days on Cabarita Beach and our stay at Halcyon House celebrating our birthday. The accommodation was great, the rooms came with everything a 5 star resort hotel would offer. The service from the staff was fantastic, very caring and considerate.
The problem is their restaurant Paper Daisy, the food was so "tricked up" there was no taste. Not sure who they are trying to emulate but this is the most unappetizing and untasty food we have ever tried to eat anywhere in the world.
For breakfast our poached eggs came as little hard boiled balls, nothing was tasty and the only meat dish on the dinner menu was .....lamb, when we asked what part of the lamb, we were advised by our waiter it was the neck...surprising us, as the neck has many bones and he assured us that they took out the bones. When it came it was either slices off the leg, shoulder or rump, definitely not neck. It was served with cold slices of cabbage, chick peas and capers over the meat and was the most tasteless dish, needless to say we left it on the plate. This was the continuing episodes for our stay so we then decided to eat away from Paper Daisy to save us the embarrassment of having to decipher what we were eating and complaining to the staff.
The dinner menu had, pippies, cold vegetables one fish dish and one meat dish, the lamb. No prawns or any type of seafood normal people would eat, We used to pull pippies out of the sand when we were kids and cook them on the barbecue, don't want to have them when I am fine dining....
Such a tragedy for our time away and having spoken to other people who stayed there at a similar time to us they all said the same about the restaurant, the food was awful.
It had such a great reputation but unfortunately, like the "kings new clothes" everyone there is being fooled by their chef/food manager.
