Intimate waterfront beauty on Negril's West End with a spa, pool and innovative Jamaican cuisine
Jamaica’s Negril enclave offers two distinct island experiences: rollicking resort or chilled-out getaway. The SPA Retreat sits comfortably in the latter category. Taking his cue from the area’s signature wood and stone houses, SPA Retreat’s owner/architect Shane Cohen has built a sleeker version of those rustic handcrafted cottages. It’s a place for singles who want to escape it all, and lovers looking for a quiet, intimate getaway. Here, the doting staff focus on setting the scene for a getaway filled with pampering spa treatments and innovative Jamaican cuisine.
Bed and Bath
All the Rooftop Cottages, and even the Garden Stone Cottages on the lower level, have private patios with views of the Caribbean Sea. Each room is individually designed with a different color scheme, but the Old World Caribbean countryside theme is uniform throughout. All the furnishings, from four-poster beds to sofas, are hand-carved, and even the towering ceilings are made from rich Jamaican cedar. The Retreat Suite, the resort’s piece de resistance, is a mini penthouse with a large outdoor balcony, an indoor living room and a grand bathroom with a shower that has room for two (and plenty of island-made bath products).
Days quickly fall into an easy pattern at SPA Retreat: sunbathing by the pool sipping cocktails, laddering down the cliff into the turquoise water for snorkeling, an afternoon siesta and soaking up the Jamaican sunset — fine entertainment, as there are no in-room televisions. Evenings are spent tasting the light, mostly local fare in the Blue Mahoe restaurant, especially the callaloo and pumpkin soup, and lobster stuffed with roasted island vegetables. Beyond the relaxation, you can also take part in the property’s yoga and Pilates classes under the spa pavilion, learn a few Patois phrases at the bar and get blissed out with a simple spa treatment.
In the Area
Unwind with the Spa Retreat’s varied treatment menu, which utilizes local ingredients. Go beyond Swedish massage and try a Brown Sugar & Coffee Scrub. For a chance to see real Jamaican nature, take a trip to YS Falls a visit to the rum factory with Island Routes. Go for a round of golf at the nearby 18-hole Negril Hills Golf Club or just hang out at the resort, which has ladders leading into coral-strewn waters with hidden coves. Jumping isn’t encouraged (leave that to the daredevils), but be sure to have a dip at least once during your stay.
