Contemporary Caribbean getaway at Atlantis with a water park and private beach
Contemporary Caribbean. Many all-inclusive resorts in the Bahamas come with the inevitable palm patterns and shell art. But at this 14-acre condo-style hotel, the marble lobby has wood-paneled walls and egg-shaped microsuede loungers, and the rooms have furniture with pops of orange, brown and light green, pearly marble bathrooms with granite countertops, and teal- and turquoise-trimmed floor-to-ceiling windows that lead to ocean-facing balconies.
Bed and Bath
All of the 497 rooms in The Reef Atlantis, an Autograph Collection, have a residence feel, with kingsize beds, marble bathrooms with oversize tubs, iPod docks and Bose sound systems, and equipped kitchens (with electric stovetops, cutlery, tablewares and dishwashers in the Studios), which make for a nice alternative to expensive meals out at Atlantis.
There’s a nearly three-mile stretch of sand (exclusive to The Reef and Cove Atlantis guests), and palm-fringed paths that lead to Atlantis’s six swimming pools, the Mayan temple water slide park, the Mandara Spa and fitness area and the myriad on-site restaurants — 21 in all — where you can savor crispy conch and cornmeal-crusted chile rellenos at celebrity chef hotspot Nobu. Although The Reef Atlantis, an Autograph Collection, has no restaurant (only a Starbucks in the lobby), it’s a short walk to the Cove, for the daily buffet breakfast at Mosaic.
In the Area
The Reef Atlantis, an Autograph Collection, is located on the slower-paced westernmost corner of Paradise Island, Atlantis’s sprawling mass of a casino, luxury shops and marine displays — and the Caribbean’s largest water park. In between splashes on the private beach, have some sushi at Nobu (or at popular local spot Seafront Sushi), and fresh fish with Bahamian music at the weekend Fish Fry at Arawak Cay. Watch fishing boats bring in the daily catch, and later try it at the food stalls of Potters Cay. Dive with scores of Caribbean reef sharks with Stuart Cove’s Dive, and imbibe and unwind at the nearby One&Only Ocean Club, or take the 38-mile jaunt from Nassau to the Northern Exumas with Powerboat Adventures for shark feeding, snorkeling and surf and turf.
