French manor house charm and a sumptuous vino-centric spa in the Napa Valley's foodie fantasyland
This inn and its sprawling grounds looks like what might happen if an elegant French country manor were deconstructed and dropped into the heart of California Wine Country. From this charming spot, rows of neatly manicured rose bushes and the occasional white picket gate are all that separates you from the gourmet fantasyland of Yountville. Among the orange trees and rose bushes you’ll find tumble-down farm carts converted into planters and stone-lined pools filled with water from a burbling fountain. The evocation is fitting, since parts of the property are converted from the original Groezinger Estate winery, which dates back to the 1870s.
Bed & Bath
Overlooking the grounds are 80 spacious guestrooms set in clusters of two-story wood-paneled or brick cottages. The rooms offer luxe amenities that belie the property’s rustic feel. This is pure country charm — with a much higher thread count. Each room has its own wood-burning fireplace, and ground-floor rooms have private patios, while second-floor spaces are equipped with balconies and wood-raftered cathedral ceilings.
Days start with a free champagne breakfast and wind down with you warming by the wood-burning fireplace after a soak in the oversize hot tub. In between, you can play a few sets of tennis on the on-premises courts, relax at the world-class Spa Villagio on the Estate grounds or stretch out with a yoga or Pilates class. Travel the wine trail on your own (the inn provides free iPod Touches preprogrammed with winery maps and suggested tour routes) or with a bike touring company, and, of course, eat your way through the Michelin Guide. No joke: Yountville boasts more Michelin stars per capita than any other hamlet in the nation.
How to Get There
A short walk to many of Napa’s most sought after restaurants is the primary attraction, and the breakfast buffet is extremely well done.
That’s the positives. Now the negatives. A number of defects in the room - the safe failed and required a visit from the engineer. Then the thermostat failed requiring another visit from the engineer. The first easy-light “fire in a bag” didn’t light easily and then also did not burn very well. A second bag the next day burnt too well and collapsed so that a large piece of burning wood fell against the fireplace door. Since the hotel had not provided any fireplace tools, we had to call for help lest the glass in the fireplace door would crack. There are no towel bars nor hooks in the bathroom, something I’ve never encountered. Where do they expect you to hang your clothes while bathing? What is one supposed to do with wet towels?
The biggest negative, leaving me with a sour taste and a problem yet to be resolved is in the bill. There was a daily add-on resort fee that was not disclosed when we made our reservation. Then I noticed the day after we checked out that the amount charged to my credit card was more than 200 more than on my bill and that there was an additional second charge for a small amount. Right now I don’t know what is going on because the hotel has not responded 12 hours later to the call that I made, nor the follow up email that I sent, asking for clarification and correction. That’s no way to run an enterprise at the level this one aspires to.
The Vintage House is a beautiful place to stay, with an absolutely wonderful staff that always greeted us with a smile. We did have a couple issues with miscommunication, but Angela handled everything very professionally, and went out of her way to make everything right. The facilities were lovely, and the people even better. Not exactly a budget hotel, but it's Yountsville, and for the location it's a great value. Highly recommended.
If you visit the Napa Valley, Vintage House is the only place where you should stay. For us, it was perfection from the moment we pulled up. Christopher Proft and his team do a beautiful job making sure each guest feels like they’re the #1 priority. It was our honeymoon trip, and most of what made it so magical was our stay at Vintage House. The hotel overdelivered with its impeccable decor and charm, A+ service, superb staff, and having access to the wonderful shops, restaurants and Villagio House was an added bonus. Not to mention — the hotel is perfectly situated in the center of Yountville delivering the best in wine, food and entertainment. I eve traveled the world and can inequitably say Vintage House is a special place; we give our wholehearted endorsement of the property and the wonderful team and its impressive management.
From the minute we arrived, we noted just how attentive and friendly the staff was. We entered to a lobby that is very white, very bright and wonderfully decorated. The staff then escorted us to the room, continuing to make us feel very welcome and at home. The rooms were very impressive...very comfortable and elegant, complete with a fireplace. The days took us off property, but we spent each night at the pool, by the fire tables, drinking the bottles we collected during our wine tours. Fortunately, we took advantage of the hotel breakfast each morning, which was only a short walk from our room. The offerings were varied and delicious--a perfect way to start the day. Be sure to leave yourself enough time to explore and really take in the town of Yountville. After only two nights, our plan took us to the hustle and bustle of San Francisco, but I really wish we had stayed put at Vintage House!
The rooms were spotless and the beds were very comfortable with soft sheets and pillows. One of the highlights of the hotel was there breakfast. A large assortment of different foods. The raspberries were the best ever had.The staff was very attentive, friendly and a great source of information.Valeted the car and every time I picked it up we had waters in the car waiting. I can't say enough about this hotel. Overall this hotel is a 10!
