Less than an hour north of Napa, the Sunburst Calistoga is a comfy, stylish base for exploring the region’s wineries, spas and boutiques. Fully renovated in 2013, guestrooms are done up with a retro-modern look in bright orange, white and black, with flatscreen TVs, mini fridges and coffee makers. All of the en-suite bathrooms have black-and-white tiled showers stocked with Gilchrist & Soames amenities, plus robes and vintage-style vanities. For travelers with pets, the hotel partners with a local pet-sitting service to provide private walks, group exercise and more (for a fee). Fresh coffee is available in the lobby and guests are welcome to refuel from a day on the vineyards with picnics and wine in the manicured garden. Or, for serious relaxation, there are three outdoor mineral pools heated naturally by local hot springs to between 80 and 100 degrees.
In the Area
Historic Calistoga is a gateway to some of California’s best wine regions, including Sonoma Wine Country, Russian River Valley and Healdsburg. Most wineries now have daily tastings for a small fee — check out favorites like Chateau Montelena, plus Bennett Lane Winery and Castello di Amorosa. Beyond the vines, the region is known for its Old Faithful Geysers, just a short drive away, hikes along the Palisades Trail and the vibrant art scene in downtown Calistoga. For foodies, nearby Yountville is a hub for Michelin-star restaurants. Book well in advance to score a table at the legendary French Laundry, Bouchon or Redd, or head to downtown Calistoga for dinner at local fave, JoLe.
How to Get There
Everything about the stay was perfect. They had my birthday on welcome sign and had a bottle of rose all day in my room. Spa was excellent. Rooms were so cute! Loved the retro feel. Massage was awesome. Only negative was construction noises.
Lovely hotel for anyone not into the traditional upscale places. This is way more fun and casual experience. I would however recommend they have an adults only pool at least one. Not everyone wants to hang out with other people’s kids on vacation. Especially in a spa town like Calistoga. The rooms are so cool and unique.
Great rooms; love the Adirondack chairs outside each room. Place has two pools and a hot tub. Great cabana areas to relax near the pools. Fresh containers of water at poolside. We even played a game of Battleship. Bikes available to ride and family board games.
Stayed here with my husband to attend a friend's wedding in Calistoga. Rooms are updated in a clean, modern, and fun way. Pool area was nice with the lounging beds. Only complaint was that the kiddie pool wasn't completely separated from the adult pool. Would recommend the resort adopts a 13+ year old rule to be in the adult pool. Not the best experience when your protecting your drink from splashing kids.
This used to be the Sunburst, which was fun, but since it's been revamped there are some little touches that make the experience a lot better. We came as a family to escape the San Francisco fog, and had an awesome time. Pools are half shaded, half sunny in the afternoon, there are private cabanas and couches, plenty of umbrellas, big suites, and they actually had delicious coffee in the rooms in the morning. We came with our toddler and it was easy as can be. The 2 ft warm pool was perfect for little ones, you can sit right next to the pool in a shaded cabana and chill out without worrying (if your kid can't swim). We walked into town but they also have free cruiser hikes for the half mile trip.
