Less than an hour north of Napa, the Sunburst Calistoga is a comfy, stylish base for exploring the region’s wineries, spas and boutiques. Fully renovated in 2013, guestrooms are done up with a retro-modern look in bright orange, white and black, with flatscreen TVs, mini fridges and coffee makers. All of the en-suite bathrooms have black-and-white tiled showers stocked with Gilchrist & Soames amenities, plus robes and vintage-style vanities. For travelers with pets, the hotel partners with a local pet-sitting service to provide private walks, group exercise and more (for a fee). Fresh coffee is available in the lobby and guests are welcome to refuel from a day on the vineyards with picnics and wine in the manicured garden. Or, for serious relaxation, there are three outdoor mineral pools heated naturally by local hot springs to between 80 and 100 degrees.
In the Area
Historic Calistoga is a gateway to some of California’s best wine regions, including Sonoma Wine Country, Russian River Valley and Healdsburg. Most wineries now have daily tastings for a small fee — check out favorites like Chateau Montelena, plus Bennett Lane Winery and Castello di Amorosa. Beyond the vines, the region is known for its Old Faithful Geysers, just a short drive away, hikes along the Palisades Trail and the vibrant art scene in downtown Calistoga. For foodies, nearby Yountville is a hub for Michelin-star restaurants. Book well in advance to score a table at the legendary French Laundry, Bouchon or Redd, or head to downtown Calistoga for dinner at local fave, JoLe.
How to Get There
My girlfriend and I were lucky enough to visit the spa during their "Spring Equinox Party" that included discounted massages, face masks and wine of our choosing. The staff there was INCREDIBLY nice and accommodating, the amenities were excellent and the location was beautiful. I will highly recommend this stay to anyone that is considering a relaxing visit to the beautiful Napa Valley.
Great gals getaway! Lovely spot to share down time and fun in the sun and warm waters of Calistoga. Convenient to all Calistoga has to offer. Next time we will build time in for a bike ride! Love the mid-1900's vibe.
We needed a place last minute and were lucky to score 2 rooms for our family very last minute. The rooms were spacious, tidy and the decor is super fun. The hot springs were kid-friendly and my guys LOVED the pool with the giant rubber duck. I think the spirit of the hotel is young and fun - and all the guests seemed to be enjoying themselves. We had a great sleep and I would have loved just one more night. I would highly recommend this for families visiting Napa - and I think the couples and groups of friends I met there would also recommend the hotel as suiting their travel needs.
The Calistoga Motor Lodge is a super cute hotel that has been renovated in a kitschy mid century modern style. We loved the playful touches like board games and hula hoops in the room and appreciated the great location, within walking distance of downtown Calistoga. The only negative I would note is that our bathroom was small with limited storage (and no shelving in the shower). Generally though, we found this hotel to be a great value in the Napa Valley!
We came for a girls trip and had am amazing time! The rooms are affordable and the King Suites were great for the group. I can see coming back as a couples trip or even with family. The spa services were amazing and the grounds have so much to offer. If the weather is right bikes are available for a very short ride to town. Perfect for all!
