Less than an hour north of Napa, the Sunburst Calistoga is a comfy, stylish base for exploring the region’s wineries, spas and boutiques. Fully renovated in 2013, guestrooms are done up with a retro-modern look in bright orange, white and black, with flatscreen TVs, mini fridges and coffee makers. All of the en-suite bathrooms have black-and-white tiled showers stocked with Gilchrist & Soames amenities, plus robes and vintage-style vanities. For travelers with pets, the hotel partners with a local pet-sitting service to provide private walks, group exercise and more (for a fee). Fresh coffee is available in the lobby and guests are welcome to refuel from a day on the vineyards with picnics and wine in the manicured garden. Or, for serious relaxation, there are three outdoor mineral pools heated naturally by local hot springs to between 80 and 100 degrees.
In the Area
Historic Calistoga is a gateway to some of California’s best wine regions, including Sonoma Wine Country, Russian River Valley and Healdsburg. Most wineries now have daily tastings for a small fee — check out favorites like Chateau Montelena, plus Bennett Lane Winery and Castello di Amorosa. Beyond the vines, the region is known for its Old Faithful Geysers, just a short drive away, hikes along the Palisades Trail and the vibrant art scene in downtown Calistoga. For foodies, nearby Yountville is a hub for Michelin-star restaurants. Book well in advance to score a table at the legendary French Laundry, Bouchon or Redd, or head to downtown Calistoga for dinner at local fave, JoLe.
How to Get There
Great location, friendly staff and comfortable rooms. Perfect for just relaxing by the pool or at the spa and walking distance to restaurants, shops and wine tasting. Great tasting rooms within a short drive or bike ride. We had a wonderful stay and will definitely be back.
Wish we had stayed more than one night! Honestly, the hotel does not look all that stunning from the road. A good reminder not to judge a book by its cover. One inside, the charming, kitschy 1960's roadtrip era styling confronts you in a comforting embrace. Everything appears and feels so fresh and clean. The colors are subtle and well matched colors. There seems to be coolers of fruit or vegetable infused ice water around every corner, but the real gem is the pool! The pool area is on par with any resort I have experienced with cabanas, large square lounge beds, comfortable chaise lounges, umbrellas, etc. The pool water is temperature controlled mineral water from local sources. Three pools in total of approximately 85F, 95F, and 105F. Our room was updated with and awesome shower/bathroom and a cooly comfortable bed. This property greatly exceeded our expectations and was on of the most reasonably priced stops on our 14 day NORCAL visit. Great value. Would definitely stay here again!
My wife and I stayed for the first time and we loved it. We frequently stay in Calistoga so we have stayed at pretty much all of the various hotels and lodges. Would definitely stay again in the future.
WE had such a relaxing stay here. We chose it because of the retro styling (combined with location and reasonable price) and we were delighted to find it lived up to the pictures. The pool area is really well thought out and a lot of thought has gone into the motor lodge overall, with the little touches making all the difference.
Nothing Special about this hotel. Nice pool & spa. Not too far from downtown. There were a few bugs in our closet & shower. The coffee was great! The room was spacious and decorated very fun! Probably would stay there again
