Classic luxury. The ground-floor Peacock Lounge sets the scene, with its high ceiling, gold and glass chandelier and high-backed “peacock” chairs. Colorful artwork inspired by the landscape and people of Myanmar is dotted throughout the hotel, adding panache to an otherwise conventional aesthetic.
Bed and Bath
The hotel’s 270 rooms (485 by 2014) feature heavy, dark wood furnishings and wall paneling offset by a luxurious cream and gold palette. Tasteful local artwork adorns the walls above the beds. Rooms have views of the bustling city, the Yangon River or the glittering Shwedagon Pagoda. Bathrooms are comfortably large, with powerful rain showers, and the Suites offer separate glass shower cubicles.
The Traders Café, an impressive modern eatery on the first floor, serves an “around the world” buffet of Asian, Indian, European and American favorites. The dessert and pastry station showcases Indian sweets and, for the adventurous, durian ice cream. For more formal dining, reserve a table at the hotel’s Cantonese Summer Palace restaurant for dim sum lunches and multicourse banquets. End the day over happy hour and a game of pool at the Gallery Bar (try the potent Mandalay Sour, the hotel’s signature tipple). The recently renovated health club spa has a gym, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, which are all free to use and open until midnight.
How to Get There
Overall still excellent but may be basking in its past glory. I think it would need to keep improving if it needs to keep pace with rapidly changing Yangon.
Great location. Couldn’t be better if one wanted to stay in the heart of the city. Higher floor ( deluxe ) rooms have a superb view of the Pagoda ( at least mine did). Incredibly well trained and friendly staff; especially the front office, concierge and housekeeping folks. Wifi is excellent. Rooms were decently sized and good enough - not super modern but still in well maintained shape.
The public areas are tired and in the need of an upgrade. There was a huge, tacky mango papier-mache statue near the lobby for some mango festival which was completely out of place. Excellent breakfast spread. However on all 3 days of breakfast there was at least one stale item on the buffet. Day one it was the sushi roll. Day two it was the mango mousse ( or something similar in a glass) and on the last day it was the Indian Prawn curry.
Hotel is very luxury and thank you very much for upgrading my room to the horizon floor. It was amazing!.
Breakfast was great international foods, there were many line of buffet for selecting. There was supermarket, currency exchange counter and some restaurants at ground floor of hotel. It was convenient; furthermore, shopping arcs nearby hotel.
Hotel location is in city center, you can walk approx 10 mins to Scott Market and main sightseeing around hotel.
