The Review

With its European style and Uruguayan soul, the brand new After Hotel is transforming Montevideo’s hotel scene. I lived in Uruguay’s gentle capital once upon a time, and I adore it for having all the charms of its celebrated Argentine counterpart (Colonial-era quirks, European feel, great steak), plus a dazzling coastline and a laid-back vibe. But Montevideo is not, generally speaking, a mecca of fashion or service. Restaurants can take 15 minutes to serve coffee, the dress code is casual, and the nice hotels are often stodgy.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2678/prop-86866-1339600867-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”The brand new After Hotel is just a few blocks from Montevideo’s quiet riverside esplanade.”}

The After is changing all that. It has a look that is clean-lined and swish. The 92 guestrooms, which range from comfortably cozy to uncommonly ample, are smartly done up, with black-and-white interiors accented by patterned gray carpets, mod metal light fixtures and dashes of crimson and chocolate. Premium Rooms and top-floor suites show off luxe Italian leather sofas and lounge chairs. The bathrooms are state-of-the-art affairs in slate, chrome and mirrors.

The location in the posh Buceo neighborhood has advantages and drawbacks. On the one hand, the area — home to the city’s emerging financial district and an upscale residential community — has great dining and a grassy and undeveloped shoreline, and it’s totally safe. On the other hand, the attractions of the city center are relatively far away (though the front desk will happily arrange a city tour).

The best part about staying here is that the After, like Montevideo, inspires people to take it easy. By 5:30 p.m. the lobby bar, 20 Pasos Café, is buzzing with businessmen unwinding over whiskey-based cocktails, while tuckered-out leisure travelers refresh themselves with a rooftop swim. In the morning a lavish continental breakfast featuring everything from scrambled eggs to bread with dulce de leche is available until 11 — yet another indulgence for travelers enjoying the easy life, Uruguay-style.

NOT a 4 star hotel
Reviewed 1 week ago

Room was ok (had a premium) except for the hard-rock bed and the sewer smell that permeated it throughout the day. The shower/bathtub controls were awkward to reach and the safety bar to hold on to in order to get in and out of the tub was loose -coming out of the wall- a danger if a guest needs to grab on for support.
Breakfast was average in spite of the non smiling faces of the restaurant employees.
Room service costs are not the same when charged! Beware. Check your bill! Also, there are discrepancies among employees as to whether the hotel has this or that.

Many parts of the building are in disrepair, lack of paint, crumbling bits of wall, etc.
I feel this is unacceptable for the category they claim to be.

As a whole, the hotel does not reflect a professional image. I will not stay there again even though I travel to Montevideo quite often.

It's incredible how slow is the internet. I called and they told me to "log out and log in again" and of course it does not works... It is not possible to use Skype nor Netflix, it's like living in 1990.

Consider another hotel if you use internet.

Awesome wi-fi and breakfast

Awesome Staff.

Nice and tidy. Good mirrors.

A little difficult to get but calm. Across the beach.

What I liked best:
The wi-fi and the breakfast.

What I liked the least:
The shower was losing water so the floor was all wet when I came out.

Great experience for an awesome price!

I had a great stay during our weekend celebration of LOVE. Michel especially went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied and felt at home during our stay. The room was decorated for our stay and they even brought little treats to the room as an extra added love token for our celebration. Breakfast was superb! All in all, I recommend this hotel and will definitely be staying in the future. THANKS!
