How to Get There
When we have visited the Monterey Peninsula in the pass, we have stayed at chain hotels. This time, we wanted to stay in a local inn on Cannery Row, and we could not have been more pleased with our choice. As the first hotel on Cannery Row it is very close to old Monterey, but a bit of a walk to Lovers Point and Pacific Grove.
I would rate the hotel and room as a 4, but I gave it a 5 because the oceanfront rooms not only have the ocean but your own aquatic playground with the sea otters, seals, ocean-going birds, fishing boats and kayaks right beneath your balcony. The balcony is small, but large enough for two chairs and a small table. Very private. I don’t know what would separate this hotel from all of the others on Cannery Row, if you do not opt for an oceanfront room. Without an oceanfront room, this is a nice, but unremarkable hotel. The hotel is T-shaped with oceanfront rooms at the far end across the end of a long hallway. The one slow elevator in the establishment is next to the lobby which is at the opposite end of the hallway from the oceanfront rooms, but there is a stairway close by to enable quick access to the car garage and the outside.
We did have an oceanfront room (214) which was a nice-sized older room with a sofa, small tables for eating breakfast and a small fridge. The bathroom was nice with shower/bath combo. The hotel has a small lobby where the clerks were very pleasant, helpful and professional. Bryan was at the desk most of our stay and he was very professional and accommodating.
Parking is great. You are given a parking pass so that you can self-park in the hotel’s covered garage.
Continental breakfast is included with the rooms. You hang your breakfast selection outside your door at night and breakfast is delivered to the door at the tijme you have selected. This is a very nice touch allowing you to eat your ample breakfast in your room or on the balcony while the wildlife in the bay provides the entertainment. The menu includes tea/coffee, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, basket of croissants/baked rolls, fruit plate, orange juice & coffee. Not enough to make you feel over-stuffed, but plenty of food to start the day.
We will definitely stay here again.
We stayed at the Monterey Bay inn two years ago and had such a wonderful time we decided to come back all the way from Minnesota. This place is perfect, right on the water, perfect for seeing/hearing all sorts of wildlife. Our favorite room is 309, last time we stayed in 310 and that was perfect as well. The continental breakfast delivered to your room when you request it is so relaxing and delicious. The customer service is excellent. The location is perfect, in-between cannery row and fisherman’s wharf but far away enough from both to get away from the tourist craziness. If we return to Monterey we will definitely stay here again. It is worth the extra money to be right on the water.
If you don't care for snobbery this is the place to stay. Bethany and Merl are great at the front desk! They make sure your needs are addressed to your satisfaction without making you feel like they are doing you a favor unlike some other hotels. Very refreshing indeed!
The ocean front views here can't be beat-otters love to hang out in the kelp beds all year long. The balcony is huge compared to other hotels and is a big plus while enjoying the ocean view. The complimentary breakfast is a great plus for sleepy heads or just kicking back in the morning.
We were me by Merl at the front desk and immediately were pleased we had selected to stay at the Monterey Bay Inn. She was incredibly helpful in getting us settled in and providing assistance with restaurant recommendations and advice on how to best spend our three days in the area. She provided a personal touch and made us feel at home. Thanks, Merl!
The rooms are nicely appointed with double sink baths, separate w/c, a small couch and table. Our room looked out at the coast and the harbor where we could watch the wildlife, the humans diving and running the beach, and beautiful hills in the distance. A simple but satisfying breakfast was brought up to the room at our selected time. So nice not to have to run out and find a place to eat before starting your day.
Recommend the Monterey Bay Inn and would certainly stay again!
We stayed in the Monterey Bay Inn whilst on Honeymoon. We chose a room overlooking the town and beach. The room was huge and had a fabulous view of the pier and we had sea lions coming out of the water to sun themselves right beneath us. The hotel is in walking distance of the pier and wharf with its lovely pubs and eateries. The staff at the hotel were really great and helpful when our room key didn't work twice. They gave us a bottle of wine in compensation which was a nice touch. Overall a great place to stay.
