This all-suite sleep fits right into its downtown Monterey location thanks to a Spanish adobe-inflected design. The spacious lobby has a homey vibe, from the terra-cotta tile floors and working fireplace to the cowhide chairs and comfy sofas. Outside, a double height waterfall feature anchors a quiet courtyard that’s perfect for soaking up the year-round Central Cali sunshine. Guestrooms start at a spacious 450 square feet, with hardwood floors, seating areas, gas fireplaces and mini fridges. All bathrooms have both tubs and standalone showers, and each room has a private, furnished patio or balcony (accessed via an outdoor corridor in Standard Junior Suites). There’s no restaurant, but a hearty breakfast spread of pastries, fruit, yogurt and more is served each morning, and there are free afternoon refreshments.
In the Area
For family trips, a stop at the town’s famed aquarium is a must, as is a tour with Princess Monterey Whale Watching for dolphin, orca and humpback whale spotting. Spend an afternoon browsing the shops, galleries and wine-tasting rooms along Cannery Row — some favorites include the Cannery Row Antique Mall and Pierce Ranch Vineyards outpost. For a memorable meal, make a reservation at the wonderfully old-fashioned Sardine Factory and be sure to order the abalone bisque, which was served at President Reagan’s inaugural dinner.
How to Get There
We had a one night stay while traveling up the coast. Parking and check in were easy. The room itself was clean, quiet and very comfortable.
Breakfast seemed very popular among the guests, but I thought it was rather ordinary, with the standard continental fare; nothing hot. Come for the room, but go out for breakfast.
I stayed at Hotel Pacific the first week in April on a Groupon deal. My travelling companion had stayed there in the past, and told me it was top notch. Not anymore.
The maintenance was sorely lacking and the housekeeping was next to non-existent. Let me start with maintenance. At the front desk, there was a large area of the ceiling that was covered in plastic tarp and blue tape. Unsightly, but not unforgiveable. Both ice machines were not functioning, and appeared to have been that way for quite a while. The hotel is horribly noisy, in part due to poorly fitting doors and windows. I could see a 1” gap of daylight under the entrance door. There were bits of gum all over the terra cotta tile, which lended a tatty appearance to the hotel. Our toilet ran, wasting a lot of water. Even after it was repaired, it still ran excessively. The toilets desperately need to be replaced with low flow versions. The natural stone bathroom counter desperately needed a coat of sealer to protect it. The mini fridge was sitting in an unvented cupboard which was excessively warm when opened. The freezer portion of the fridge had evidently never been defrosted, as there was 6” of ice built up around it. On the positive side, we were able to store a bag of ice inside the fridge for 2 days without having it melt. Everything generally led one to believe the property is going downhill.
Housekeeping was worse than maintenance. There was soot all over the fireplace mantel which obviously hadn’t been cleaned in a long time. The carpet was filthy, which was evident by how black our socks were after walking on the carpeting a short while. We were give one washcloth. Really? The topper for me was the dirty dishes. When I went to have a cup of coffee, the cup [turned upside down on the shelf appearing to be fresh] looked shiny on the inside bottom. It appeared to be semi-dried on juice or wine. A glass I had used in the bathroom was simply replaced upside down on the paper doily the next day, evidenced by fingerprints and greasy smudges all over it. The second day, once again the “fresh” coffee cup was dirty with the stains from the previous day’s coffee. There was mold around the drain of the bathroom sink, which would be easily cleaned with a small brush and some bleach. Someone had thrown a sock into the planter outside our front door, and it was still there when we left two days later. The glass-topped dining table in the room was positively filthy with fingerprints.
I would say this was not the pleasant, relaxing experience I had expected. I was even afraid to use the hot tub, given the condition of the rest of the hotel. We made management aware of the majority of these issues, but nothing was corrected. I will not be staying here again, even with a Groupon discount.
I really wanted to LOVE this hotel. The pictures look great and of course I paid attention to the traveler photos but it had such great reviews. Anyway, we got a room on the 2nd floor and it was very dark. I was hoping to get some Monterey sun to come they the doors but it was not like that at all. The staff is great, they have basic breakfast like cereal and bagels, but I hated that you had to pay for parking. I may stay here again only if there is nothing else available but i would want to. It’s not horrible but don’t expect too much either.
Great stay at the Hotel Pacific! Loved the spacious room with the sitting area with fireplace. Also liked liked the french doors that opened up to a large patio area. All of the staff was friendly and helpful and the hotel was clean and updated. It was a quick 5 min walk to the wharf. I would stay there again!
Normally I stay next-door at Portola but decided to venture out and stayed here !from the get go I have not had a good experience ! I had one of their front desk people called me when I was in travel around 6 PM very rude and asking when I would be there and being very demanding to know what exact time I would be there! I’ve never had a hotel do that!... I asked if there was a problem and they have shift change and we didn’t have Notes ... when in my confirmation I told them I would be there between early evening ... got here look at the facility it is not been maintained it is old and needs to be remodeled it looks nothing like the pictures that they post on another travel site ... none of the water features or fire features are up and working like the show in the pictures ... everything on the exterior this is dingy ...we get to the room they put us into a room that hadn’t even been made look like somebody had just left ! everything seems so beat up ... went downstairs told the front desk they put us into a second room right next to the spa and a busy street mind you I ordered a Premier Junior suite ... did get the suite but I think it was like the last one they had ! right being next to the spa was a bunch of noisy people mind you this is by 9 PM at night when we’re getting in ...then have to go downstairs again and let them know that the noises from the spa need to be controlled 20 minutes later that was handled ... ( mind you it’s not even a hotel phone with a button to call downstairs and that’s the reason I had to go downstairs because it was just a regular phone ) went down to get ice at only one of the two ice machines on the property that one was broken the other one is like 300 feet away ...... no sooner got back with ice and my girlfriend decided to take a bath, the tub wouldn’t not even drain ... also they’re pretty breakfast that they show looks nothing like that I’ve included pictures ... it absolutely disgusted me to see what was there for breakfast and I’m going on to another place ! on top of the homeless people coming through digging through garbage cans which is a picture I posted from upstairs looking down ..I believe it’s the last picture I posted with the homeless man... it tells me there’s no security on site ... along with all the other broken outdoor features including terra-cotta pots .. The place is not worth $300 a night I’ve stayed in best Western hotels and Ramada inns far more superior than this ...If I could get a refund on my night tonight I would!!!! I would stay elsewhere but it’s all locked in..I don’t believe I will ever stay here again. Beyond totally disappointed !
