All-suite, Spanish-style sleep in downtown Monterey with in-room fireplaces and patios or balconies

The Lowdown

This all-suite sleep fits right into its downtown Monterey location thanks to a Spanish adobe-inflected design. The spacious lobby has a homey vibe, from the terra-cotta tile floors and working fireplace to the cowhide chairs and comfy sofas. Outside, a double height waterfall feature anchors a quiet courtyard that’s perfect for soaking up the year-round Central Cali sunshine. Guestrooms start at a spacious 450 square feet, with hardwood floors, seating areas, gas fireplaces and mini fridges. All bathrooms have both tubs and standalone showers, and each room has a private, furnished patio or balcony (accessed via an outdoor corridor in Standard Junior Suites). There’s no restaurant, but a hearty breakfast spread of pastries, fruit, yogurt and more is served each morning, and there are free afternoon refreshments.

In the Area

For family trips, a stop at the town’s famed aquarium is a must, as is a tour with Princess Monterey Whale Watching for dolphin, orca and humpback whale spotting. Spend an afternoon browsing the shops, galleries and wine-tasting rooms along Cannery Row — some favorites include the Cannery Row Antique Mall and Pierce Ranch Vineyards outpost. For a memorable meal, make a reservation at the wonderfully old-fashioned Sardine Factory and be sure to order the abalone bisque, which was served at President Reagan’s inaugural dinner.

This was a very attractive hotel from the outside. We were given a room on the ground floor which we didn't particularly like. The door of the room could be accessed from the street so we didn't feel too secure while we had to keep the blinds closed as we felt that people could easily look in. There was also a bus stop outside the room. We objected to the room but were informed in rather disinterested fashion that the hotel was full and that we had to keep that particular room for the night. Our daughter was given a nice room on the second storey. As we were stopping for 2 nights we spent 1 night in the room and on the next morning again asked if we could transfer to a different room. This time we were lucky (the staff seemed a bit more helpful) and were able to transfer for which we were grateful and this time we were given a lovely room on the third storey - full marks to that day's staff. One of the problems with the hotel is that there were little niggly faults. We could make coffee in the room but had nothing to stir the coffee with. There were no glasses in the room to drink out of. The first storey room had 2 bottles of conditioner rather than 1 bottle of conditioner and 1 of shampoo. The buffet breakfast was quite good but on the first morning there was no butter for the toast. When we asked the staff we were told there was no butter available. On the second morning there was butter available to spread on the toast. The plus point is that the hotel is beautifully positioned in Monterey and the good views from the upstairs rooms make staying there worthwhile.

Great place

Really enjoyed our stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. The location was excellent too, just 5 minutes from almost everything. The hotel staff were friendly and very helpful at answering the questions we had.

Charming welcoming hotel

My wife and I stayed for a couple of nights prior to our drive down the PCH. The check in was quick & easy, self parking was convenient and not too expensive. The suite was well presented and clean. Some small signs of tiredness in some of the furniture, but that probably added to the charm of the place. The suites are spacious and nicely laid out. Continental breakfast was included and both plentiful and tasty. The toasters were a bit slow to toast your bread or bagel, otherwise very good.

Old time charm in updated buildings.

The entire staff were pleasant and helpful. Our room for my husband and I consisted of two full beds. Not exactly what we expected. The room was pretty clean. Centrally located in town and convenient for walking to pier etc.
